IPL 2025: MS Dhoni Returns as CSK Captain, Twitter Erupts in Roars and Reverence

IPL 2025: In a dramatic twist straight out of a Bollywood screenplay, Mahendra Singh Dhoni has returned to lead Chennai Super Kings for the remainder of IPL 2025.

With Ruturaj Gaikwad ruled out due to a fractured elbow, the iconic No.7 is back at the helm - and Twitter can't keep calm.

IPL 2025 MS Dhoni Returns as CSK Captain Twitter Erupts in Roars and Reverence

On the eve of their crucial clash against Kolkata Knight Riders at Chepauk, CSK dropped the bombshell: Gaikwad, their newly minted skipper, would miss the rest of the season.

The 27-year-old was battling pain since being struck on the elbow during CSK's game against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on March 30. Despite the injury, he showed grit, playing two more matches before scans confirmed a fracture.

"He's been operating with an amount of pain... unfortunately, he'd be out of the tournament," CSK head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed. "We have an uncapped player, MS Dhoni, who will take over as captain."

Uncapped in the literal sense of the term, maybe. But Dhoni's legacy? Untouchable.

At 43, the five-time IPL-winning skipper steps in again - not for glory, but to steady a faltering ship. CSK are languishing in ninth place with just one win in five matches. The timing couldn't be more desperate, but for the fans, it's poetic. As one viral tweet put it:

"In 2022, he stepped down - destiny called him back. In 2023, he handed it over - got the captaincy back. Twice he walked away. Twice he returned. MS Dhoni, The Eternal Captain. The one and only."

Twitter lit up the moment the announcement dropped. One fan summed up the emotional wave sweeping across Chennai: "Chepauk will be louder than ever tomorrow when MS Dhoni walks out for the toss at 7PM!!"

It's not just nostalgia. It's a mixture of hope and heartbreak. Another tweet read: "Ruturaj Gaikwad - Injured. Fractured elbow. Season over. CSK's backbone gone. MS Dhoni steps back in. Not as a stopgap. As a guardian." A guardian indeed - not just of CSK's campaign, but of its very soul.

For many, Dhoni's return highlights CSK's struggle to find a long-term successor. One post hit hard: "CSK have not found a replacement for Captain MS Dhoni in past 3 years. Mumbai Indians are just another RCB without Captain Rohit Sharma. Those 10 Trophies are not fluke. History will never see captains like them again."

Despite the romanticism, the road ahead is treacherous. CSK are short on confidence and even shorter on time. Fleming admitted there was "never a doubt" Dhoni would step in when asked.

"He had no hesitation to step up and help guide us out of this," he said. "We'll look from within first... but yeah, there is an opportunity to enhance the squad."

It's not the comeback Dhoni envisioned. But it's the one CSK desperately needed. And as another tweet declared: "This is no more MS Dhoni's last match as captain."

The crowd at Chepauk is bracing for something special. Whether it ends in glory or not, one thing is clear - Thala is back. And for his fans, that alone is worth believing in again.
