IPL 2025: MS Dhoni set to lose huge money if CSK retain him as Uncapped Player

By MyKhel Staff

MS Dhoni can take part for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025 as an uncapped player. The former India captain can be included as an uncapped player in CSK's retention list.

The CSK CEO, Kasinath Viswanathan, has requested the BCCI to reinstate the uncapped rule that was in place from 2008 to 2021. This rule classified players who retired from international cricket for five or more years as uncapped. Although scrapped due to franchise concerns, the rule may return ahead of the IPL 2025 season.

MS Dhoni will likely play another season for CSK in the upcoming season, and the franchise is set to retain him. If Dhoni plays as an uncapped player, his IPL salary could see a significant reduction.

How much will MS Dhoni earn as an Uncapped player?

Under current rules, uncapped players can be retained for INR 4 crores at most. Dhoni was earning Rs 12 crore at CSK in his last contract, which means the former India captain will have a 66.67 % reduction in his salary, a total loss of 8 crore.

Dhoni himself has expressed curiosity about how things will unfold for him next season. He mentioned that without command pressure this time, it might be easier for him at 43 years old. The veteran relinquished captaincy last season and handed over the reins to Ruturaj Gaikwad.

The potential reinstatement of the uncapped rule could significantly impact Dhoni's role and salary in IPL 2025. If the BCCI agrees to bring back this rule, it would allow retired players like Dhoni to participate as uncapped players, affecting their financial terms with their teams.
