Mumbai Indians have officially named Suryakumar Yadav as their stand-in captain for their highly anticipated IPL 2025 opener against Chennai Super Kings on March 23 in Chennai.
Regular skipper Hardik Pandya will miss the match due to a one-game suspension imposed at the end of last season for maintaining a slow over rate.

With vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah also sidelined due to injury, the leadership responsibility falls on Suryakumar, who has been India's T20I captain over the past year. The announcement was made by Hardik Pandya himself during MI's pre-season press conference, where he was joined by head coach Mahela Jayawardene.
"Suryakumar Yadav leads India as well. He will lead Mumbai Indians in the first match," Hardik confirmed when asked about MI's captaincy plans for the crucial clash.
Suryakumar, known for his aggressive batting and tactical acumen, will be tasked with leading MI against their arch-rivals CSK in what promises to be an electrifying contest. His leadership skills have already been tested on the international stage, making him a natural choice to guide the five-time IPL champions in this high-stakes encounter.
Mumbai Indians will look to make a strong start to their campaign under Suryakumar's captaincy, while Hardik is set to return for the team's second fixture. The battle against CSK, led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, is set to be a blockbuster opening game of the IPL 2025 season.
