IPL 2025: The Eden Gardens witnessed carnage on Monday as Nicholas Pooran continued his red-hot form in IPL 2025, blazing his way to a match-winning 87 off just 36 balls.
In the process, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) southpaw became the second-fastest batter in IPL history to reach the 2,000-run milestone — taking only 1,198 balls to get there.

Facing Kolkata Knight Riders in Match 21, Pooran walked in after the openers Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh had laid the platform with a 99-run opening stand. But what followed was a ruthless display of power-hitting from the Trinidadian star.
| Rank | Player | Balls Faced |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Andre Russell | 1,120 |
| 2 | Nicholas Pooran | 1,198 |
| 3 | Virender Sehwag | 1,211 |
| 4 | Chris Gayle | 1,251 |
| 5 | Rishabh Pant | 1,306 |
| 6 | Glenn Maxwell | 1,309 |
Pooran and Marsh stitched a 71-run partnership for the second wicket, taking the LSG total to 170 before Marsh departed. But Pooran wasn't done yet — he took on even the most seasoned campaigners, including mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy and the ever-reliable Sunil Narine, smashing them to all parts of the ground.
His unbeaten 87 off 36 deliveries featured seven fours and eight sixes, and powered LSG to a mammoth 238/3 in 20 overs, leaving the KKR bowlers clueless and the Eden Gardens crowd stunned.
In the 16th over of the innings, Pooran made history. He played a controlled pull off a slower short ball from Andre Russell to reach another personal landmark — becoming only the second-fastest player to 2,000 IPL runs in terms of balls faced. He took just 1,198 balls, behind only Russell himself (1,120 balls), and ahead of T20 legends like Virender Sehwag (1,211 balls), Chris Gayle (1,251 balls), Rishabh Pant (1,306 balls), and Glenn Maxwell (1,309 balls).
The West Indian now has 2,055 runs from 78 innings in 81 matches, boasting a strike-rate of 167.94 and an impressive average of 34.83. What’s more, he currently holds the Orange Cap in IPL 2025 with over 280 runs, including three fifties and a strike rate soaring above 220.
Pooran’s approach was simple but brutal. In the 15th over, he pulled Russell for a monstrous six — "Just used the pace and helped the ball along," the commentator said. Even though Russell attempted to outfox him with off-pace deliveries, Pooran stood tall, unbothered and unflinching.
As the IPL 2025 season heats up, Nicholas Pooran is proving to be a nightmare for bowlers. With his calculated aggression, extraordinary consistency, and ability to dominate elite attacks, he’s no longer just a dasher — he’s a match-winner.
And now, with one of the fastest 2,000-run milestones in his bag, Pooran has stamped his name alongside the biggest IPL greats — and he's showing no signs of slowing down.
