All the franchises have announced their retention list ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Some of them retained their core team intact while some went for a complete revamp of the squad. Few teams parted ways with their captains.
However, in the history of IPL, many experienced captains have been there, but only a few of them have also won the titles. But, currently, only a handful of them are still active and will participate in IPL 2025.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is undoubtedly the most decorated skipper of any team in IPL history. He led Chennai Super Kings and Rising Pune Supergiants in 226 matches and won multiple titles with the former. Rohit Sharma is the only other captain who comes close to Dhoni’s legacy as an IPL team captain. Sharma won five titles with Mumbai Indians as their captain and led MI in 158 matches.
Among the active players, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Sanju Samson are the others who are on the list of the top ten most experienced captains.
Here’s a list of some of the most experienced captains in IPL history, based on the number of matches they have captained:

Five players who were captains in the last IPL have been released, including Shreyas Iyer who led KKR to the title in IPL 2024. Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Faf du Plessis, and Sam Curran are the other four.
Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul are the only two captains who are present in the all-time most experienced captains list but have not been retained by their respective teams. However, there is a player on the list who is the only one who is on this list and also has been retained.
Rajasthan Royals skipper, Sanju Samson has been retained by the franchise as the first choice for a price of Rs. 18 crore. Eventually, he became the only player who is in the top ten list of the most experienced captains of IPL and also has been retained by any franchise, making him the sole active most experienced captain. Samson led RR in 61 matches with a winning percentage of 47.54. RR won 31 matches under his captaincy, though the IPL title has still eluded him.
