Shreyas Iyer is on the verge of a major milestone as he takes the field in the IPL 2025 against Gujarat Titans on Tuesday (March 25).
Iyer, who is captaining Punjab Kings, will etch his name to a prestigious list when he leads the Kings in their IPL opener this season.

The India player was bought by Punjab Kings for Rs 26.75 crore in the mega auction and was immediately appointed as captain. As Iyer assumes captaincy, he will become only the 2nd Indian player to attain an IPL record.
The Mumbai-born will be only the 2nd Indian player to lead three different teams in the IPL. Iyer captained Delhi Capitals in the past and then led Kolkata Knight Riders till last season. He took the Capitals to a final and won his first title as captain for KKR in 2024.
Shreyas Iyer joins Ajinkya Rahane in the prestigious milestone. Rahane achieved the same feat earlier this season when he captained Kolkata Knight Riders in the first match of the season against RCB, becoming the first India player to lead three different IPL teams.
Virat Kohli has been a stalwart but he led only one as RCB, while MS Dhoni led Chennai Super Kings and Rising Pune Supergiants. Current India head coach Gautam Gambhir also led two IPL teams - Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders, while former India captain Sourav Ganguly led KKR and Pune Warriors India.
Shreyas Iyer also becomes the fifth player overall to lead three different IPL teams. Sri Lanka duo Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, while Australia legend Steve Smith are the overseas players to achieve the feat.

Steve Smith - Pune Warriors India, Rising Pune Super Giants, Rajasthan Royals
Ajinkya Rahane - Rising Pune Supergiants, Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders
