The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced the revised schedule for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Playoffs.
This adjustment follows a one-week suspension of the tournament due to heightened geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan. The playoffs will now commence on May 29 and conclude with the final on June 3.
The initial plan had slated Kolkata's Eden Gardens and Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium to host the playoff matches. However, due to the unforeseen suspension and subsequent rescheduling, the BCCI opted for venues less susceptible to weather disruptions during the monsoon season. This strategic move aims to ensure the smooth progression and culmination of the tournament.
The IPL 2025 season, which resumed on May 17 after the suspension, is set to conclude with the final match on June 3 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the world's largest cricket stadium.
Match | Date | Venue |
---|---|---|
Qualifier 1 | May 29 | Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur |
Eliminator | May 30 | Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur |
Qualifier 2 | June 1 | Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad |
Final | June 3 | Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad |
The IPL 2025 Playoffs will follow the traditional four-match format involving the top four teams from the league stage. The format is designed to give the top two teams an extra chance to reach the final.
Qualifier 1: Played between the top two teams. Winner goes straight to the final.
Eliminator: Played between the third and fourth-placed teams. Loser is knocked out.
Qualifier 2: Features the loser of Qualifier 1 and the winner of the Eliminator.
Final: Contested by the winners of Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2.
As of May 20, three teams - Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Punjab Kings - have sealed their playoff spots. The final place is likely to be decided between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. MI hold a slight edge due to their superior net run rate and current points tally. The clash between MI and DC on May 21 could prove decisive.
