Openers have played a key role over the years in IPL with some combinations taking the bowlers to the cleaners inside the powerplay, and some providing a steady start before exploding as the game progresses.
Chris Gayle, Brendon McCullum, Dwayne Smith, Virender Sehwag, Tillakaratne Dilshan, David Warner, and Shane Watson are among the greats who provided some fast starts in the previous editions of Indian Premier League.

Gautam Gambhir, Robin Uthappa, Sachin Tendulkar, Mahela Jayawardene, Mike Hussey, Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay are the other former openers, who have played vital knocks as openers.
When the attack arrives from both the openers it's tough for the fielding side to handle. We have seen recent combinations like Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan as well as Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head dominate the first six overs of the innings.
While some combinations may continue their run-scoring spree as a pair again in the upcoming Indian Premier League season 18, several teams are expected to field new opening batters in IPL 2025. Here is a look who could be the opening pair for all teams heading into the season:
Chennai Super Kings (CSK): Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad will continue in the role alongside one of the Kiwis in Devon Conway or Rachin Ravindra. Going by form, CSK may use Ravindra as Gaikwad's partner.
But if they select based on history, the five-time champions may reunite their successful combo of Conway and Gaikwad. Either way CSK will get the most important factor of left-right combination sorted.
Mumbai Indians (MI): Former captain Rohit Sharma is expected to retain the opening spot, but the five-time winners will need to find a new partner for the Indian skipper with Ishan Kishan moving to Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Will Jacks and Ryan Rickelton are the overseas options available to MI. Rickelton provides the left-handed option which most teams like in their opening combo. Mumbai Indians also have used a left-right combination mostly. So, a choice will be made based on form and the wicketkeeper selection.
It will be either Jacks or Rickelton opening the batting as Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav are likely to take the number three and four positions, giving no room for either the South Africa or the Englishman to bat in the top four.
Royal Challenger Bengaluru (RCB): Virat Kohli, the star batter of the franchise, will continue to open the batting, but like Rohit in MI, the former RCB skipper also will need a new opening partner with Faf Du Plessis moving to Delhi Capitals.
England wicketkeeper-batter Phil Salt is the most likely partner for Kohli in the upcoming season. But RCB can also use Devdutt Padikkal to make the left-right combination possible by playing the southpaw alongside Kohli or Salt. In all likelihood, it will be Kohli and Salt opening the batting for RCB.
Gujarat Titans (GT): Captain Shubman Gill is the obvious choice, but who opens alongside him will be interesting as the 2022 champions have some good options to pick in the form of the tested duo of youngster Sai Sudharsan and IPL great Jos Buttler.
Gill and Sai Sudharsan present GT with the left-right combo, but will the Titans take the call to demote one of the most experienced openers in the IPL, Buttler? All three batters have the ability to bat deep and explode as the game progresses, presenting a headache for the Titans think-tank.
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG): With the departure of their three previous opening combinations, LSG will need a new pair leading them out with the bat. If Mitchell Marsh is fit enough for the season, the Australian all-rounder is expected to open the batting for LSG.
Marsh's partner could either be new skipper Rishabh Pant or South African T20I captain Aiden Markram. If Marsh does not start the season, LSG could also look at Matthew Breetzke and young Arshin Kulkarni to open alongside Pant. Marsh and Pant could be LSG's first choice.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR): The reigning champions would have wanted to continue with their championship-winning opening duo, but Phil Salt has left the scene leaving Sunil Narine in need of a new partner.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz is one of the options for KKR if they want to still maintain the pair from last season. They also have Quinton de Kock, one of the best openers in IPL history in their ranks. It will all depend on the four overseas players they pick.
Narine is expected to open with either De Kock or Gurbaz as only one of the two wicketkeepers will feature in the playing 11 with Narine, Andre Russell and possibly another pacer taking up the overseas slots.
Punjab Kings (PBKS): Prabhsimran Singh may continue in the opening role as the franchise retained the Punjab wicketkeeper ahead of the season. His opening partner will be a call taken by new head coach Ricky Ponting with several options available in the squad.
PBKS has only uncapped Priyansh Arya and Australia's Aaron Hardie as opening options. They can also use the likes of Josh Inglis up the order. Once again it will depend on the four overseas players getting the nod on the matchday. Prabhsimran and either of Inglis, Hardie or Arya could be the openers.
Delhi Capitals (DC): Abhishek Porel and Jake Fraser-McGurk are two of the options from DC. But with the arrival of experienced duo of KL Rahul and Faf Du Plessis, the opening combination is likely to be different in IPL 2025.
Fraser-McGurk would have been an immediate pick, but his form is a worry heading into the tournament. DC, however, are spoilt for choices when it comes to openers. So, it won't be a problem area for them. Porel and Rahul could be the openers for DC in the upcoming season.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH): Last season's runners up are the only teams that will not want to alter their combination from 2024. The explosive pair of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head will continue in the role.
Ishan Kishan presents a good option as an opener, but it is likely that the Indian wicketkeeper will bat at number three. They also have Atharva Taide as an opening option. But there is no way, SRH will separate the dangerous duo of Head and Sharma.
Rajasthan Royals (RR): The inaugural champions like SRH can easily find their opening pair in Yashasvi Jaiswal and skipper Sanju Samson, who started opening the batting for India in T20Is. Teenager Vaibhav Suryavanshi is another option, but RR will stick to experienced duo of Samson and Jaiswal.
