IPL 2025: RCB must improve Three Areas for Success Featuring Virat Kohli, Josh Hazlewood

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) made headlines during the IPL 2025 auction by assembling a well-rounded squad. Armed with the second-largest purse, the franchise opted for a balanced team rather than chasing marquee players.

While their strategy promises potential, a few glaring issues could hinder their pursuit of a maiden IPL title. With months left before the tournament, RCB faces challenges ranging from player form to fitness concerns. Here are the three biggest problems the franchise must address.

IPL 2025 RCB must improve Three Areas for Success Featuring Virat Kohli Josh Hazlewood

1. Virat Kohli’s Declining Form

Virat Kohli, the talismanic leader of RCB, has been struggling with consistency in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Aside from a century in Perth, Kohli’s performances have been below par, with dismissals often stemming from a persistent weakness outside the off stump.

This inconsistency is worrying for RCB, as Kohli has historically been their batting backbone. Despite a stellar IPL 2024 season where he finished as the highest run-scorer, his recent struggles in international cricket might affect his confidence. If Kohli fails to regain form before IPL 2025, the team could face significant batting vulnerabilities, jeopardising their chances of success.

2. Josh Hazlewood’s Injury Woes

RCB’s pace spearhead Josh Hazlewood suffered a calf injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, ruling him out of the series. While reports suggest he might return in time for IPL 2025, questions linger about his fitness and readiness to deliver at peak performance.

The Australian pacer, acquired for ₹12.50 crore, is expected to lead RCB’s bowling attack. However, calf injuries are tricky, and the physical demands of an intense IPL schedule could pose challenges. Hazlewood’s inability to play a full season would disrupt RCB’s bowling plans and force them to rely on less experienced options.

3. Lungi Ngidi’s Fitness and Suitability

South African pacer Lungi Ngidi was roped in to strengthen RCB’s bowling unit, but he comes with his own set of concerns. Ngidi has been plagued by injuries, including a groin issue that sidelined him for several months. Even if he returns, which itself is slated for January, the conditions at the Chinnaswamy Stadium – known for its short boundaries and high-scoring games – may not suit his bowling style.

Moreover, Ngidi’s economy rate, which has been more than 10 in the last two editions, has been a concern in past IPL seasons. If he fails to adapt, RCB could struggle to contain opposition batters, putting additional pressure on their batting unit to compensate for defensive lapses.
