IPL 2025 Retention: How much Money will Teams have for Auction based on Retentions? A complete Guide

By MyKhel Staff

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 retention deadline approaches as the franchises are entitled to submit their retained players list by October 31.

But right after the retention list, the IPL franchises will be readying themselves for the big war, which is the IPL 2025 auction.

IPL 2025 Retention

BCCI and the IPL governing committee has increased the team purse to Rs 120 crore this season, but a premium amount will have to be sacrificed if the teams will to exercise their retention options, the more retentions, the bigger is the sacrifice.

IPL 2025 Retention: What is the Rule?

To clarify, a team can retain up to six players, either during the retention phase or using the Right-To-Match (RTM) card in the mega auction. Among these, a maximum of five can be capped players, while only two can be uncapped.

IPL Retention Player Values

Capped Player 1 - Rs 18 cr
Capped Player 2 - Rs 14 cr
Capped Player 3 - Rs 11 cr
Capped Player 4 - Rs 18 cr
Capped Player 5 - Rs 14 cr
Uncapped Player - Rs 4 cr

Also, there is a new rule added by BCCI ahead of this auction, which takes effect in case of higher sums from the allotted amount for the retained players. If a franchise pays a player more than their retained value, the extra amount will be deducted from their purse. For instance, if a capped player is paid INR 17 crores instead of his bracketed INR 14 crores, the additional INR 3 crores will be deducted. Conversely, paying less than the retained value still results in the full bracketed amount being deducted.

IPL 2025 Retention: How Much Money will be Deducted for Retentions? A detailed Scenario

Scenarios for Player Retention

Two scenarios outline how player retention affects the purse deduction from the total INR 120 crore budget. In Scenario 1, if all six players are retained before the auction, specific amounts are deducted based on their capped status. Scenario 2 involves retaining fewer than six players and using RTM cards during the auction.

Scenario 1

This scenario involves no RTMs for the franchise, as the team retain maximum six players.

Capped Players Retained Uncapped Players Retained Purse Deduction (INR) Remaining Purse (INR)
5 1 79 cr 41 cr
4 2 69 cr 51 cr

Scenario 2

This is where things gets interesting and very tricky for all the franchises. Here, the deductible value will vary with the capped and uncapped players and the team who may stick with more players are likely to go into the auction with lesser amount in purse. If a franchise wishes to retain no players, they can use the RTM card for Six players.

Capped Players Value: 18 cr, 14 cr, 11 cr, 18 cr, 14 cr
Uncapped Players Value: 4 cr
