The much-awaited Player Regulations rule for IPL 2025-2027 is out, and all the ten teams have been left with the task to retain the players of their choices. Each team will be allowed to pick a maximum of six players. This can be either via retention or by using the Right to Match (RTM) option which has been brought back for the first time since 2018.
"It is at the discretion of the IPL franchise to choose their combination for Retentions and RTMs. The 6 retentions / RTM’s can have a maximum of 5 capped players (Indian & Overseas) and a maximum of 2 uncapped players," the official release by the IPL said.

That means that the teams could retain all their six players ahead of the auction without leaving an option to use the RTM at the mega auction. However, it is unlikely that any team would use the option of retaining all six players as that would dent their auction purse massively.
They will have to pay Rs 18 crore to the first-choice retained player, Rs 14 crore to second, Rs 11 crore to third, Rs 18 to fourth and then Rs 14 again to the fifth. Franchises are allowed to retain a maximum of two uncapped players at a price Rs 4 crore each.
As per Cricbuzz, the ten IPL teams will have to release their retention list by 5:00 PM IST on October 31. That means that owners, captains and coaching staff will have to sit together for brainstorming sessions in the coming days to finalise and submit the retention list.
"It may be noted that for retention purposes, any player who gets capped on or before October 31, 2024, will be considered a capped player." Cricbuzz has quoted.
