IPL 2025 Retention: List of Players Retained by CSK Ahead of IPL Mega Auction Over The Years

By MyKhel Staff

Last week, the Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council announced the player regulations for 2025-27 cycle, including the much-awaited rules for retentions among many other guidelines.

As per the IPL announcement, teams can retain a total of 6 players from their existing squad. This can be either via retention or by using the Right to Match (RTM) card, meaning teams can also opt to release all their players and use the RTM at the IPL mega auction.

The retention is also limited to a maximum of 5 capped players (either Indian or overseas), and a maximum of 2 uncapped players. The uncapped rule also has a new twist with an old rule returning after three years.

As per re-instated uncapped rule, a capped Indian player will become uncapped, if the player has in the last five calendar years not played in International Cricket or does not have a Central Contract with BCCI. This rule existed from 2008 to 2021 before being scrapped.

Chennai Super Kings could be one of several teams that could benefit from the move as it allows them a chance to retain their marquee player Mahendra Singh Dhoni at just Rs 4 crore. But there is not clarity of if the Chennai-based will use the option.

CSK may opt to retain four players and use two RTM cards at the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, scheduled to be held later this year either in November or December. The deadline for teams to announce their retentions is on October 31, 2024.

CSK's Likely Retentions For 2025

  • Ravindra Jadeja
  • Ruturaj Gaikward
  • Shivam Dube
  • MS Dhoni

CSK have been part of every IPL edition since it's inception in 2008, barring two editions when they were banned in 2016 and 2017. However, they have been part of the retention process ahead of every mega auction held so far in IPL history.

The five-time champs have retained Dhoni every season since they acquired him ahead of the inaugural edition. So, that trend may continue even this year. The same may be the case for another veteran in the team, Ravindra Jadeja, who has been part of the franchise since 2012.

A mega auction has been held in 2011, 2014, 2018 and most recently in 2022, editions in which teams have gone through big changes. Here is a look at list of players who CSK retained ahead of those mega auctions.

CSK Retained Player List Before IPL 2011 Mega Auction

Ahead of the first-ever IPL mega auction in 2011, the Chennai-based outfit retained four players - skipper Dhoni for $1.8 Million, Suresh Raina for $1.3 Million, Murali Vijay for $900,000 and Albie Morkel for $500,000.

CSK Retained Player List Before IPL 2014 Mega Auction

In 2014, India Cements-owned side opted for their star Indian players as their retentions in the form of Dhoni, Raina, Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin. While Dhoni was retained for Rs 12.50 Crore, Raina, Ashwin and Jadeja were retained for Rs 9.50 Crore, Rs 7.50 Crore and Rs 5.50 Crore respectively.

CSK Retained Player List Before IPL 2018 Mega Auction

In 2018 on their return to the league, CSK retained their big three in the form of Dhoni, Raina and Jadeja. MSD was retained for Rs 15 Crore, while Raina was retained for Rs 11 Crore, and Jadeja was retained for Rs 7 Crore.

The Yellow Brigade also used the RTM card to buy back some of their key players, South African batter Faf Du Plessis for Rs 1.6 Crore, and West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo for Rs 6.4 Crore.

CSK Retained Player List Before IPL 2022 Mega Auction

In 2022 when two new teams joined the league, Chennai Super Kings opted to retain Jadeja for the highest slab of Rs 16 Crore, and Dhoni at the second highest slab of Rs 12 Crore as well as England all-rounder Moeen Ali for Rs 8 Crore and Ruturaj Gaikwad for Rs 6 Crore.
