IPL 2025 Retention: List of Players Retained by Mumbai Indians Ahead of IPL Mega Auction Over The Years

By MyKhel Staff

After the Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council announced the player regulations for 2025-27 cycle, including the much-awaited rules for retentions, all eyes is on five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI).

As per the IPL announcement, teams can retain a total of 6 players from their existing squad. This can be either via retention or by using the Right to Match (RTM) card, meaning teams can also opt to release all their players and use the RTM at the IPL mega auction.

The retention is also limited to a maximum of 5 capped players (either Indian or overseas), and a maximum of 2 uncapped players. The uncapped rule also has a new twist with an old rule returning after three years.

As per re-instated uncapped rule, a capped Indian player will become uncapped, if the player has in the last five calendar years not played in International Cricket or does not have a Central Contract with BCCI. This rule existed from 2008 to 2021 before being scrapped.

Mumbai Indians could be one of several teams that could benefit from the move as it allows them a chance to retain someone like Piyush Chawla as an uncapped player at Rs 4 Crore. But it is highly unlikely that the leg-spinner is on top of MI’s wish-list for retentions.

MI may opt to retain three players and use three RTM cards at the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, scheduled to be held later this year either in November or December. The deadline for teams to announce their retentions is on October 31, 2024.

MI's Likely Retentions For 2025

  • Jasprit Bumrah
  • Suryakumar Yadav
  • Hardik Pandya

MI have been part of every IPL edition since it's inception in 2008, and they have also been part of the retention process ahead of every mega auction held so far in IPL history.

The five-time champs have retained or bought back most of their former players, looking to keep their core together. So, that trend may continue even this year. While Rohit Sharma may move on, Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav could extend their stay at the Mumbai-based side.

A mega auction has been held in 2011, 2014, 2018 and most recently in 2022, editions in which teams have gone through big changes. Here is a look at list of players who MI retained ahead of those mega auctions.

MI Retained Player List Before IPL 2011 Mega Auction

Ahead of the first-ever IPL mega auction in 2011, MI retained four players – icon Sachin Tendulkar for $1.8 Million, Harbhajan Singh for $1.3 Million, Kieron Pollard for $900,000 and Lasith Malinga for $500,000.

MI Retained Player List Before IPL 2014 Mega Auction

In 2014, MI opted to retain five players in the form of Rohit, Pollard, Malinga, Harbhajan and Ambati Rayudu. While Rohit was retained for Rs 12.50 Crore, Malinga, Pollard, Harbhajan and Rayudu were retained for Rs 9.50 Crore, Rs 7.50 Crore, Rs 5.50 Crore and Rs 4 Crore respectively.

MI Retained Player List Before IPL 2018 Mega Auction

In 2018, MI retained their big three in the form of Rohit, Hardik Pandya and Bumrah. Rohit was retained for Rs 15 Crore, while Hardik was retained for Rs 11 Crore, and Bumrah was retained for Rs 7 Crore.

MI also used the RTM cards to buy back some of their key players, West Indies all-rounder Pollard for Rs 5.4 Crore, and Indian all-rounder Krunal Pandya, who become one of the most expensive uncapped buys at the time, for Rs 8.8 Crore.

MI Retained Player List Before IPL 2022 Mega Auction

In 2022 when two new teams joined the league, Mumbai Indians retained Rohit for the highest slab of Rs 16 Crore, and Bumrah at the second highest slab of Rs 12 Crore as well as Suryakumar Yadav for Rs 8 Crore and Pollard for Rs 6 Crore.
