The Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council has announced the much-awaited rules for retentions alongside the other player regulations ahead of the upcoming IPL 2025 Mega Auction, which could be held either next month or December.
The retention rule states that teams can retain a total of 6 players from their existing squad either via retention or by using the Right to Match (RTM) card. This also means teams can also opt to release all their players and use the RTM cards at the IPL mega auction.

The retention is also limited to a maximum of 5 capped players (either Indian or overseas), and a maximum of 2 uncapped players. The uncapped rule also has a new twist with an old rule returning after three years.
The re-instated uncapped rule allows a capped Indian player to be considered uncapped, if he has not played in International Cricket or does not have a Central Contract with BCCI in the last five calendar years. This rule existed from 2008 to 2021 before being scrapped.
Many teams could benefit from that rule, including Punjab Kings, who have a lot of planning to do as they were one of the teams that would have preferred to retain most of their title-winning squad from 2024.
While there would be so many tempting options, PBKS think-tank may like always go for a clean slate and release everybody. However, they may opt to retain two uncapped players and use 4 RTM cards at the auction for their capped players.
PBKS has gone for a complete reveamp ahead of one of the previous mega auctions, but in all likelihood, the Punjab-based side may retain two top uncapped performers from last season ahead of the retention deadline, which set to be October 31, 2024.
PBKS have been part of every IPL edition since it's inception in 2008. They have also participated in the retention process ahead of every mega auction held so far in IPL history like the six other teams.
A title has eluded PBKS, who have made the final only once so far in 17 seasons of the Indian Premier League. They have often faltered at the auction. PBKS has never used up all their retention slots before mega auctions, and that could be the case even this year.
A mega auction has been held in 2011, 2014, 2018 and most recently in 2022, editions in which teams have gone through big changes. Here is a look at list of players who PBKS retained ahead of those mega auctions.
Ahead of the first-ever IPL mega auction in 2011, PBKS opted to build from scratch as they released the entire squad from the 2010 edition. At the auction, they went on to sign the likes of Adam Gilchrist and bought back a star from their inaugural edition, Shaun Marsh.
In 2014, PBKS opted to retain just two players from their 2013 squad with the retention of David Miller for Rs 12.50 Crore, and a surprise uncapped retention of Manan Vohra for Rs 4 Crore. They also used RTM to buy back Parvinder Awana for Rs 65 Lakh at the auction.
In 2018, PBKS opted to retain only one player in the form of Indian all-rounder Axar Patel for Rs 6.75 Crore, but lost Rs 12.50 Crore from their purse due to the retention slab rules.
PBKS also used the RTM card to buy back some of their key players, South Africa batter Miller for Rs 3 Crore, Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis for Rs 6.20 Crore and India pacer Mohit Sharma for Rs 2.40 Crore.
In 2022 when two new teams joined the league, Punjab Kings opted for another rebuild, but retained India batter Mayank Agarwal, who would later be named as the captain, for Rs 12 Crore, and an uncapped pacer Arshdeep Singh for Rs 4 Crore.
