IPL 2025 Retention: The retention rules are out and ball is in the court of the ten IPL franchises now. The IPL governing council has allowed teams to retain a maximum of six players including the Right to Match rule.
That means that a team can either retain all six players before the auction, or retain a desired number of players and leave room to use a couple of Right to Match in the IPL mega auction 2025 which will reportedly be held in November.

Each team can retain a maximum of five capped players, and two uncapped players. An Indian player who has not featured in the playing eleven of the national team in the last five years will also be considered as an uncapped player. This rule is particularly going to help someone like former India captain MS Dhoni, Piyush Chawla, and Vijay Shankar.
As per a report in Cricbuzz, the first pick by the team in the list of retained players will get Rs 18 crore, the second one Rs 14 crore, the third one Rs 11 crore, before two more capped players for Rs 18 crore, and Rs 14 crore respectively. The uncapped players can be retained for Rs 4 crore.
All the dynamics are set to make the retention process an interesting one for the fans, and draining for the ten franchises. Will the team opt to retain two players for Rs 18 crore each? How many capped players would they look to retain considering that the money would directly be reduced from their respective auction purse? Can they risk releasing a few players in the hope to get them by RTM?
Amidst all the intricacies of the IPL 2025 retention, six big players are particularly in focus. Let's have a look.
Rohit Sharma: The former Mumbai Indians captain is a big point of discussion among fans and experts alike. His demotion at Mumbai Indians last year, and then leading India to a T20 World Cup 2024, has spiced up everything. Many like Mohammad Kaif have openly suggested that he should leave for any team which gives him the captaincy role.
Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah: The newly-appointed captain of India's T20I team Suryakumar Yadav, and the most sought after bowler in the world Jasprit Bumrah will also be in focus for understood reasons. Only two players can get the reported Rs 18 crore deal, and with Hardik Pandya also there in the picture as Mumbai Indians captain, things become really complicated. Each of the three players deserve that huge salary package, and Mumbai Indians will be forced to make some tough choices. Not to forget, Surya and Bumrah also carry captaincy ambitions.
KL Rahul: The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) has been in news regarding his IPL career for a few months now. His meeting with the LSG owner became the talk of the town recently. The owner Sanjeev Goenka has called him 'family' but not confirmed his retention, and the Karnataka batter has also been linked to a potential transfer to RCB.
Glenn Maxwell: The Australians IPL performance has been a mystery. Last year he managed to score 52 runs in 10 matches. In 2023, the all-rounder had scored 400 runs at an average of 33.33 and a strike rate of 183.48. Maxwell scored 108 runs in 13 matches of IPL 2020 for Punjab Kings. Will RCB retain him for Rs 11 or 14 crore after having him at the franchise since the last four years without winning any title?
Ravichandran Ashwin: The veteran off-spinner picked nine wickets in 15 outings for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2024. In the previous two seasons, the 38-year-old picked 14 and 12 wickets respectively.
In the TNPL 2024, Ashwin reinvented his T20 game, scoring 252 runs in 10 matches at an average of 36 and a strike rate of 151.80. He took the responsibility of opening for his team. He also chipped in with nine wickets. Will it tempt Rajasthan to shell out big bucks and retain the modern day legend, or will the legend himself look to move back to his old den?
Ashwin recently took charge of the CSK's high-performance center, and there are high chances that he would return to play for his former team in the twilight years of his career.
