IPL 2025 Retention? Mumbai Indians have been a star-studded side since the IPL came into inception in 2008. The team which played last season has as many as four players who played key roles in delivering India the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy in June this year.
Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav are the A-listers of the Indian cricket team, and having all of them together has been a luxury for the five-time champions Mumbai Indians.
However, with the mega auction emerging and new retention rules already out, keeping all these star players to themselves is almost impossible for Mumbai Indians now.
The IPL governing council has announced that teams will be allowed to retain six players. They can retain all the players before the auction, or leave room to use the Right To Match option at the auction table.
If the team decides to retain five capped players, the first-choice retained player would cost a team Rs 18 crore, the second retention will come at a price of Rs 14 crore while the third-choice retention would be for Rs 11 crore. For the next two retentions, the amount to be deducted will be Rs 18 crore and Rs 14 crore respectively.
Teams will be allowed to retain a maximum of five capped players and two uncapped. Each of the uncapped players would cost a team Rs 4 crore. Therefore, a team will have to spend Rs 79 crore if they opt to retain five capped and one uncapped player, and Rs 69 crore if they choose the combination of four capped and two uncapped players.
The amount spent in retention will be deducted from the team purse of Rs 120 crore. Hence, several teams would avoid picking two players under the Rs 18 crore slab.
However, the issue with Mumbai Indians is not just restricted to that. They have four players, who would need and deserve to get the highest salary cap of Rs 18 crore among the retained players. MI also have the task of accommodating youngsters like Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma.
Rohit Sharma was sacked as MI captain but won India the T20 World Cup months later, current Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, and India's new T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav - are all superstars of the game, and have a great brand value associated with them.

Also, all the four players carry captaincy ambitions. Suryakumar Yadav also made it clear during the pre-match press conference ahead of the first T20I against Bangladesh.
Mumbai Indians have tough choices to make in the upcoming weeks, but one thing is certain - they will not be able to retain Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav together.
