Punjab Kings have made another change at the helm ahead of the IPL 2025 season as Ricky Ponting has been roped in as the head coach for next year's tournament.
The former Australia captain was laid off by Delhi Capitals but has found his new home further north in Punjab. Ponting, who has a vast history of success both as a player and a coach, will have a new challenge as he prepares for the de novo challenge.

The former Delhi Capitals coach had a disappointing tenure with the Delhi team last sesaon, leading to his removal. Known for his tactical acumen, Ponting is expected to bring much-needed strategic insight to Punjab Kings.
Ponting is going to be Punjab's 11th head coach, who relieved Ponting's fellow Aussie Trevor Bayliss from his duties. But the former Australia World Cup winner says a compelling reason made him decide to join the Kings, despite having several other offers.
He saw it as a challenge due to their lack of success and frequent changes in coaching staff.
"I was talking to a few IPL teams, but 'Project Punjab' attracted me. It's a team which hasn't had a lot of success, a team that changed a lot of coaches, so I saw it as a challenge," Ponting said to ESPNCricinfo.
During his seven-year stint with Delhi Capitals, Ponting led the team to significant achievements. Under his leadership, they reached the IPL finals in 2020 and made playoff appearances in 2019 and 2021. He also played a crucial role in building a strong Indian core around Rishabh Pant.
It is to be seen if he can change the fortunes of Punjab Kings, who have been the underperformers of the IPL over the years. Across the 17 seasons of IPL, Punjab managed to qualify for the playoffs only twice, the lowest among all the teams who are in existence since the inception of the tournament in 2008. Punjab's last playoff appearance was in 2014, the season when they finished as runners-up in the competition.
