Riyan Parag etched his name into the history books by becoming the youngest captain for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Sunday during their match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
At just 23 years and 133 days, Parag surpassed Steve Smith's previous record. Smith had led the Royals at 24 years and 347 days in 2014. Parag steps into the captaincy role in the absence of Sanju Samson, who is currently recovering from a finger injury.

With this achievement, Parag joins an elite group of young IPL captains. Notable names include Virat Kohli, who led Royal Challengers Bengaluru at 22 years and 187 days in 2011, and Steve Smith, who captained Pune Warriors India at 22 years and 344 days in 2012. Others in the list include Suresh Raina (Chennai Super Kings at 23 years and 112 days in 2010), Shreyas Iyer (Delhi Capitals at 23 years and 142 days in 2018), and Rashid Khan (Gujarat Titans at 23 years and 209 days in 2022).
Parag, who debuted for Rajasthan Royals in 2019, has grown into a key figure in the squad. There was a time, when he was trolled for his performance but now he has worked his way to become a captain of an IPL side. His captaincy debut will span the Royals' first three matches of the 2025 season, apart from the ongoing SRH match, he will also lead his side against Kolkata Knight Riders on March 26 and against Chennai Super Kings as well on March 30.
Parag's leadership appointment follows a remarkable 2024 IPL season. The all-rounder amassed 573 runs in 16 matches, maintaining an impressive strike rate of 149.3. His consistent performances and ability to deliver in crucial moments made him a natural choice to lead the team in Samson's absence.
This temporary leadership stint presents Parag with a significant opportunity to showcase his capabilities on a bigger stage, further solidifying his role as one of Rajasthan Royals' most valuable players.
