Rohit Sharma's much-anticipated T20 cricket return didn't go as planned, as the Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper departed for a four-ball duck in Match 3 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
Playing against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Rohit fell victim to Khaleel Ahmed, marking his 18th duck in the tournament's history.

Facing his former teammate, Rohit attempted a flick shot but mistimed it, sending a straightforward catch to Shivam Dube at mid-wicket. This dismissal not only marked his third duck against Khaleel in the IPL but also brought him level with Glenn Maxwell and Dinesh Karthik for the unwanted record of most ducks in IPL history.
Rohit Sharma - 18 ducks
Dinesh Karthik - 18 ducks
Glenn Maxwell - 18 ducks
Sunil Narine - 16 ducks
Piyush Chawla - 16 ducks
Khaleel, riding high on the momentum, struck once again in his second over. Ryan Rickelton, who showed some early aggression with a quick 13 off 7 balls, chopped an in-swinging delivery onto his stumps. The early double blow had Mumbai Indians reeling in the powerplay.
Adding to Mumbai's woes, Ravichandran Ashwin delivered an impactful performance on his return to the CSK lineup after a decade. The veteran spinner deceived Will Jacks with a well-disguised carrom ball, resulting in a misjudged lofted shot that ended in a catch at mid-off. Jacks managed to score 11 off 7 balls before his departure.
Despite the early setbacks, MI managed to reach 52/3 at the end of the powerplay, leaving the middle order with the challenging task of rebuilding against CSK's disciplined bowling attack.
At the time of writing this article, Mumbai Indians are presently batting at /6 after 16 overs of play. Tilak Varma has been the pick of the Mumbai with batters 31 runs, while stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav notched up 29 runs.
