Shreyas Iyer has etched his name in Indian Premier League (IPL) history as Punjab Kings sealed their spot for the playoffs on Sunday (May 18).
Iyer's influence at Punjab Kings has been transformative. Beyond strategic leadership, he has been instrumental with the bat and marshalling his troops. His selfless decision to prioritize team success over personal milestones in that match exemplifies his team-first mentality.

Punjab Kings, after a long gap of 11 years, sealed their place in the IPL 2025 playoffs. After winning earlier in the afternoon against Rajasthan Royals, the Kings secured their passage to the last four as Gujarat Titans beat the Delhi Capitals.
PBKS, whose last playoff entry was back in 2014 when they were eventual runners-up, have finally broken their hoodoo and will be fighting for the title. Along with that, Iyer has also become the first captain in IPL's history to lead three teams into playoffs.
Shreyas Iyer's captaincy journey commenced with the Delhi Capitals, where he took over the reins in 2018, midway through the season from Gautam Gambhir. Under his leadership, the team reached its maiden IPL final in 2020, signalling a significant turnaround for the franchise.
After a stint with Delhi, Iyer transitioned to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). In 2024, he led KKR to their third IPL title, showcasing his ability to inspire and manage a championship-winning side. It was also the Knight Riders' first IPL title in 10 years.
After being released by KKR, the Punjab Kings acquired Iyer for Rs 26.75 crore during the IPL 2025 mega auction. Assuming the captaincy, he has now guided the team to the playoffs, marking their first appearance in 11 years. Along with that, Iyer has been excellent with the bat as well.
Across his IPL captaincy tenure, Iyer has led in 71 matches, securing 40 victories, resulting in a commendable win percentage of 56.35%. For the Punjab Kings, Iyer boasts a record of 8 wins in 12 matches, with a win percentage of 66.7 this season.
