Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the captain for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025, which was announced on Monday (January 13).
The India batter, who was bought for a whopping Rs 26.75 crore by Punjab, is set to be their new leader in the upcoming IPL season, starting from March this year.

Shreyas Iyer, an accomplished Indian cricketer, has made significant contributions to the Indian Premier League (IPL) through his leadership and batting prowess. Over the years, he has captained two prominent franchises: Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders.
Under his captaincy, the Capitals qualified for the Final once, while the Knight Riders ended their decade-long trophy drought with an IPL title victory in 2024.
Iyer's leadership journey began in 2018 when he took over the captaincy of Delhi Daredevils (later rebranded as Delhi Capitals) mid-season. Under his guidance, the team experienced a resurgence:
2018 Season: Assumed captaincy mid-season; team finished last with 5 wins and 9 losses.
2019 Season: Led the rebranded Delhi Capitals to the playoffs after a seven-year hiatus, securing 9 wins and 5 losses in the league stage, and finishing third overall.
2020 Season: Guided the team to its maiden IPL final, concluding as runners-up with 8 wins and 6 losses in the league stage.
2021 Season: Missed the first half due to a shoulder injury; upon return, the team continued under Rishabh Pant's captaincy.
In total, Iyer captained Delhi Capitals in 41 matches, achieving 23 wins and 18 losses, resulting in a win percentage of approximately 56.09%.
In the 2022 IPL Auction, Iyer was acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and appointed as captain.
2022 Season: Faced challenges with the team finishing seventh, recording 6 wins and 8 losses.
2023 Season: Missed the entire season due to a back injury; Nitish Rana served as interim captain.
2024 Season: Returned to captaincy, leading KKR to their third IPL title. The team topped the league stage with 9 wins, 3 losses, and 2 no-results, and triumphed in the final against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Across his tenure with KKR, Iyer captained 30 matches, securing 17 wins, 11 losses, and 2 no-results, culminating in a win percentage of approximately 56.70%.
Combining his leadership roles at both franchises, Iyer's IPL captaincy statistics are as follows-
Matches: 71
Wins: 40
Losses: 29
No Results: 2
Win Percentage: 56.35%
Notably, Iyer is the first captain to lead two different teams to the IPL final, achieving this feat with Delhi Capitals in 2020 and Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024. As the Mumbai player leads the Punjab team in 2025, the expectations are high for a dynamic overhaul at the franchise.
