Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting on Wednesday (September 18) took up the head coach role at Punjab Kings, replacing compatriot Trevor Bayliss in a bid to revitalize the struggling Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise.
Having spent seven successful years with Delhi Capitals, where he guided the team to the final in 2020, Ponting's move to Punjab marks a significant shift as the team looks to secure its first IPL title since the league's inception in 2008.

With Ponting now at the helm of Punjab Kings, rumours of a potential reunion with senior Australia cricketer Steve Smith are swirling. Smith, who had a stellar run under Ponting's guidance in Major League Cricket (MLC) 2024, could be a key target for Punjab Kings in the upcoming IPL 2025 Auction, particularly with the franchise in search of a new captain following Shikhar Dhawan's retirement from the IPL.
The partnership between Ponting and Smith has already yielded remarkable success in Major League Cricket. In the 2024 edition of the MLC, Ponting coached Washington Freedom to a title triumph, with Smith leading the side from the front. Also Read: List of Head Coaches of Punjab Kings Since IPL 2008
The Australian skipper's scintillating performance throughout the tournament, including a crucial 52-ball 88 in the final, earned him the Player of the Match award and cemented his status as one of the most reliable leaders in the T20 format.
Smith's MLC campaign was nothing short of extraordinary. After going unsold in the IPL 2024 Auction, many believed his T20 career was winding down. However, the talismanic batter proved his doubters wrong, amassing 336 runs at a stellar average of 56.00 and a strike rate of 148.67, making him the third-highest run-scorer of the tournament.
Under Ponting's mentorship, Smith also evolved his T20 game, hitting a career-best 21 sixes in the tournament and deploying innovative shots like the scoop, signalling a potential resurgence.
Beyond his batting, Smith's leadership has been a defining factor in his career. With a win percentage of 63.3% as a T20 captain, Smith boasts one of the best records in T20 cricket. Also Read: IPL 2025: Three teams that will be in the race to sign Steve Smith
In fact, he stands just behind India's Rohit Sharma in terms of win percentage among captains who have led 70 or more times in top-level T20s. Smith's ability to build a winning culture was evident in MLC 2024, where he led Washington Freedom to victory in 7 out of 8 matches.
Smith's leadership in the IPL is equally impressive. With a win percentage of 59.5% as an IPL captain, he ranks as one of the most successful skippers in the tournament's history among those who have led 30 or more matches. His experience and tactical acumen make him an ideal candidate to lead a team like Punjab Kings, which is hungry for success after years of underachievement.
With Shikhar Dhawan retiring from the IPL, Punjab Kings are in need of a new leader to guide them into IPL 2025. The idea of reuniting Smith with Ponting, who knows how to get the best out of him, seems like a natural fit. Smith's resurgence in MLC, coupled with his ability to lead from the front, makes him a prime candidate for the captaincy role at Punjab Kings.
As Ponting steps into his new role, his track record of nurturing young talent and extracting top performances from seasoned players will be critical for Punjab's future. His seven-year stint with Delhi Capitals turned them into a formidable force, even though they fell short of the title. Now, he brings that experience to Punjab, a franchise that has historically struggled to build consistency despite flashes of brilliance.
Smith's ability to reinvent himself as a T20 player, especially after his MLC heroics, adds to the excitement. The 35-year-old has proven he still has the skills and mindset to succeed in the shortest format, and under Ponting's guidance, he could spearhead Punjab's campaign.
As the IPL 2025 Auction approaches, all eyes will be on whether Punjab Kings make the bold move to reunite the two Australians. If they do, it could be the catalyst the franchise needs to finally claim their first IPL title. For now, only time will tell whether this reunion will take place and whether it will bring the long-awaited success to Punjab Kings.
