With just days remaining before their IPL 2025 opener, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have been forced to make a crucial change in their squad.
England pacer Brydon Carse has been ruled out of the tournament due to a recurring toe injury, leading the franchise to rope in South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder as his replacement.
Carse, who was acquired by SRH at his base price of INR 1 crore during the auction, initially sustained the injury during England's white-ball series in India. Although he was cleared to play in the Champions Trophy, his condition worsened following England's clash against Australia, where he conceded 69 runs in seven overs.
Unable to continue in the tournament, Carse was subsequently ruled out of the IPL as well. Mulder, who had gone unsold at the IPL 2025 auction despite listing himself at a base price of INR 75 lakh, now gets his maiden opportunity in the cash-rich league.
The 26-year-old had an impressive run in the Champions Trophy, picking up six wickets in three matches for South Africa. Known for his ability to contribute with both bat and ball, Mulder's inclusion provides SRH with a versatile option ahead of a long and grueling season.
Sunrisers Hyderabad, last season's runners-up, will begin their IPL 2025 campaign on March 23 with a home fixture against Rajasthan Royals. With this last-minute squad reshuffle, the team management will be hoping that Mulder can step up and deliver in the high-pressure tournament.
