Team India's T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav is reportedly set to leave Mumbai Indians with the five-time champions facing a huge dilemma regarding the retentions ahead of the IPL 2025 Mega Auction.
According to a report in Dainik Jagran, Suryakumar could follow his former skipper Rohit Sharma out of the Mumbai-based franchise, which may about to lose some of their key players as a backlash to their captaincy appointment last season.

MI is set for a huge challenge with their retentions compared to the other teams if the number of retained players allowed is limited to four. Hardik Pandya, the captain, as well as star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, batting sensation Suryakumar could have been their obvious retention picks.
However, reports have emerged that Suryakumar, who pipped Pandya to the captaincy role in the national side, may look for a new team in the Indian Premier League where he could get the leadership role.
The 33-year-old started his career with Mumbai Indians in 2012 before being bought by Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the 2014 season. The Mumbai batter spent three seasons at KKR before returning to MI in 2018 and has since been part of his hometown franchise.
Suryakumar has won two titles during his stint with Mumbai Indians so far and also broke into the national team reckoning in that period. But, the right-handed batter, who is known for his 360 degree batting, now reportedly wants to try a captaincy role in IPL.
The report also hinted that Suryakumar's former team KKR may be interested in acquiring his services if he is released by Mumbai Indians. The new Indian captain won the IPL in his first year at KKR in 2014.
Apart from KKR, who already have Shreyas Iyer in the captaincy role, teams like Lucknow Super Giants and Punjab Kings may also be very keen should Suryakumar enter the auction. All the rumours aside, MI may find a solution to keep hold of their key players.
Also, the number of retentions also may get expanded from 4 to 5 or 6. But that call will be taken after BCCI meets with the owners of the ten franchises and the other stake holders at the end of the month.
If Suryakumar Yadav does enter the auction, all the teams, including MI could be about to trigger a big bidding war for the T20 sensation and the new Indian T20I captain, who could lead the team in their T20 World Cup defence in 2026.
