IPL 2025: 'The Team Is Being Run By Virat Kohli': Ex India Star Reacts To Rajat Patidar Being Appointed As New RCB Captain

By MyKhel Staff

Mohammed Kaif has weighed in on Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) decision to appoint Rajat Patidar as their new captain for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The move came as a surprise to many, including Kaif, given Virat Kohli's long-standing association with the franchise.

In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), the ex India star expressed his thoughts on the leadership change. He admitted that he had expected Kohli to take up the captaincy again, especially after the team opted not to retain Faf du Plessis. However, he also pointed out that Kohli continues to be the central figure in the franchise, regardless of his official role.

IPL 2025

"I thought that Virat Kohli would be the guy since they decided not to keep Faf du Plessis. I thought Virat Kohli might have had some conversations. See the thing is the team is being run by Virat Kohli. Even if he is not the captain, it's on him as the team has to go for the players that he wants or plans to back. If Patidar is the captain, then for sure Kohli will have had a hand in that as well," Kaif said.

RCB has been one of the most followed teams in IPL history, despite never lifting the trophy in their 18-year history. Kaif acknowledged the influence Kohli holds within the franchise, emphasizing the respect and brand value he has built over the years.

"That franchise has not won a trophy in 18 years, but still Kohli has been with them for so many years. Without the trophy as well, he has built a lot of influence and respect and the brand value," he added.

The former cricketer also suggested that the franchise could be looking at a long-term leadership plan with Patidar at the helm. With Kohli now 37 years old, the move might allow him to focus on his batting while mentoring the new skipper.

"I was a bit surprised when he did not take up the captaincy. By bringing in a young captain it could mean that he is around 37 years old and even he wants a young player as a captain for the long term and focus on his contributions," Kaif concluded.

As RCB prepares for IPL 2025 under new leadership, all eyes will be on Patidar and his ability to lead the franchise to their much-anticipated first title. The team will be hoping that this strategic decision paves the way for success in the upcoming season.
