Yet again, Rohit Sharma's form is in question. He hasn't fired in the last three matches that he has played for Mumbai Indians this season. It appears as if Mumbai Indians are paying back Rohit by making him play in the initial part of the season.
Of course, it's just the start of a new IPL season but the way Rohit is performing for Mumbai Indians, he perhaps needs to do a Sydney again if things don't fall in place.

In other words, if Rohit doesn't get some consistency and his team is suffering because of his off-colour form, he may have to drop out or the team management might take a harsh call just like the way Indian coach Gautam Gambhir did.
Whether Rohit was actually dropped by Gambhir or was it Rohit's call to drop out of the Sydney Test will always be a mystery till someone from the team enlighten us. But in Mumbai Indians, it would be quite a simple move to move on. Otherwise, Mumbai can't afford to carry Rohit for a long time.
So what if Sachin Tendulkar convinced Rohit to stay back in Mumbai after his last year fiasco of losing the captaincy to Hardik Pandya. If Rohit would have gone for the auction, he may not have found a team, who knows?
Rohit's form has also been a bit of concern, especially since Mumbai Indians rely heavily on him to provide strong starts. It does feel like Mumbai Indians are trying to manage the transition after stripping him of the captaincy, but playing him early in the season could also be a way to help him find rhythm before the crucial stages.
Clearly, if Mumbai Indian can't take off, Rohit will automatically come under the firing line. That is because Mumbai Indians know how to handle stars. They have managed biggies like Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting in the past and therefore managing Rohit isn't a big deal for the Mumbai owners.
Unlike Chennai Super Kings, who aren't ready for the transition from MS Dhoni - Mumbai has already done that. Now, they are waiting for Rohit to get back to scoring some runs. Their coach Mahela Jayawardene won't hesitate to take a strong call like Gambhir!
