IPL 2025: Unheralded Punjab Kings Rookie Set to Team Up with His Idol Ricky Ponting
The Punjab Kings have built a reputation for identifying hidden gems in Indian cricket, and the latest name to emerge from their scouting network is Pyla Avinash.
The 24-year-old from Visakhapatnam is set to make his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut this season and will have the opportunity to work under legendary Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting, the newly appointed head coach of Punjab Kings.

Avinash, a promising right-handed middle-order batter, was picked up by Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025 auction after impressing with his explosive performances in domestic T20 cricket. His journey from a local cricketing sensation to the grand stage of IPL is a testament to his hard work and the keen eye of Punjab Kings' talent scouts.
Ashish Tuli, the General Manager of Cricketing Operations for Punjab Kings, shed light on the franchise's decision to bring Avinash on board. "Our attention was drawn to his power-hitting abilities and performance in a domestic T20 tournament. However, it is important to note that those performances were not the sole factor for our interest, as we have been monitoring him for some time," Tuli stated.
The scouting process at Punjab Kings is thorough, with a team of over a dozen scouts tracking talents across state leagues and BCCI-affiliated tournaments. "It is essential to have a keen eye for identifying the right talent at the right time, a skill that comes with experience and a deep understanding of the game," added Tuli.
A Dream Come True for Avinash
For Avinash, the opportunity to work with Ricky Ponting is a dream realized. A lifelong admirer of Ponting, he often watched videos of the former Australian captain's batting to draw inspiration. "He is a legend. I used to watch Ricky Ponting's batting videos where he would play the pull shot to get inspired. He has played some great knocks in his career, and I am looking forward to working with him," Avinash shared.
Born and raised in Visakhapatnam, Avinash picked up the sport at 13, inspired by his elder brother, who played for the Andhra Pradesh U-19 and U-23 teams. His journey saw a breakthrough moment in a local T20 tournament last year, where he smashed 11 sixes in a breathtaking 105-run knock off 58 balls. Though his team narrowly missed victory, losing by just one run, the innings caught the attention of scouts and selectors alike.
His standout performance earned him a spot in the Andhra Pradesh squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2024, where he made an immediate impact with a half-century against Mumbai. "That inning changed my life and has made me reach where I am today. It made a huge impact," Avinash reflected.
Now, as he gears up for his debut IPL season, Avinash is ready to prove his mettle. Punjab Kings will kick off their campaign against Gujarat Titans on March 25 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, and all eyes will be on the young batter as he steps onto the biggest stage of his career.
