IPL 2025: Virat Kohli backs Rajat Patidar as new RCB captain, requests RCBians to show him support

By MyKhel Staff

IPL 2025: Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have officially named Rajat Patidar as their new captain for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League, marking a significant transition in the franchise's leadership.

The decision comes after intense speculation surrounding Virat Kohli's potential return as captain but the RCB stalwart has instead chosen to rally behind Patidar, expressing full confidence in his leadership abilities.

In a video message shared by RCB on their official social media platforms, Virat Kohli extended his heartfelt congratulations to Patidar, emphasizing his journey and growth within the franchise.

"Firstly, I want to congratulate you and wish you all the best. You have really made a place in the hearts of all the RCB fans throughout the years. This is very well deserved. Myself and the other team members will be there always to support you," Kohli stated.

Kohli further elaborated on Patidar's evolution as a cricketer and leader, citing his experience captaining the Madhya Pradesh state team as evidence of his ability to lead a franchise like RCB.

"It's a huge honour for you. I am very happy for you. He's evolved, his game has improved many levels. He has led the state team. He has shown what it takes to lead the franchise. I request fans to show him support, and know he will do what is best for the team. Regardless of what happens, what is most important is the team and the franchise," Kohli added.

Rajat Patidar's appointment marks a new era for RCB, with the franchise looking to build a strong future under his leadership. Having been a part of RCB for multiple seasons, Patidar has steadily cemented his position as a dependable performer in the middle order. His ability to handle pressure situations and deliver match-winning performances played a crucial role in the team's decision to hand him the leadership mantle.

The transition comes after Faf du Plessis' three-season stint as captain following Kohli's departure from the role in 2021. While Kohli was considered for the captaincy ahead of IPL 2025, he ultimately chose to back Patidar, reaffirming his support for the young leader.

RCB's Director of Cricket, Mo Bobat, acknowledged that Kohli was a strong contender for the captaincy but reiterated that leadership extends beyond a title.

"Of course, Virat was an option. We know the fans would have leaned towards Virat, but he doesn't need a title to lead. Leadership is one of his strongest assets. He sets the tone with his energy. Faf leaned on him, Andy and I lean on him, and I'm sure Rajat will too. He had a lot of energy and excitement for this decision, he was pleased for Rajat. It's brilliant to know he's right behind it," Bobat said.

With Virat Kohli and the senior players rallying behind him, Rajat Patidar will look to guide RCB to their elusive first IPL title in the upcoming season. The franchise, known for its passionate fanbase, will be hoping that this leadership transition brings a fresh perspective and renewed energy to their campaign.
