IPL 2025: "We Are Looking at Specific Roles" - Did RCB Hint KL Rahul as Their Biggest Target at Auction?

By MyKhel Staff

Fans on social media feel KL Rahul to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) is almost a "done deal" ahead of the IPL 2025 Mega Auction after the Bengaluru-based franchise posted a video on their retention plans just before the deadline.

Rahul has been linked with a return to RCB ever since Lucknow Super Giants' owner Sanjiv Goenka publicly criticized the Indian batter after LSG's defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2024.

KL Rahul to be RCB IPL 2025 Auction target

The reported release of Rahul, has got the RCB fans even more excited about the possibility of the Karnataka batter returning to where it all started for him in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2013.

Now, the franchise may have given a biggest possible hint that Rahul is one of their primary targets as Andy Flower and Mo Bobat shared their plans for the team's retentions. Just when, head coach Flower says, "We are looking at specific roles", the picture of Rahul with former wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik appears.

Does RCB's post mean KL Rahul is headed back home in IPL 2025 Mega Auction?

While this may have no connection with Rahul being the target at the auction, this certainly hints RCB are on a look out for two key positions, which may not be addressed with retentions on the deadline day, October 31, 2024.

Rahul fits the bill as captain and wicketkeeper, the two slots that is expected to be left vacant after Dinesh Karthik's retirement and question marks over Faf Du Plessis' retention.

Flower could have just made a reference to fill in the void left by Karthik, who has taken over as the team's batting coach role from the upcoming season. There will be several other wicketkeepers entering the auction. So, RCB could target many other players.

If Du Plessis is retained, the former South African skipper is expected to continue in the role as captain. If that does not surface, then RCB will definitely do all they can to land Rahul at the auction.

However, it is not a guarantee that RCB will bag Rahul as several other teams will be interested in acquiring his services as he brings a lot to the table as an opening batter, captain and a wicketkeeper.

RCB is reportedly set to retain only Virat Kohli and possibly Yash Dayal as uncapped player, leaving funds for the franchise to spend big on someone like Rahul at the Mega Auction next month.
