IPL 2025: What Happened to CSK? Inside Chennai Super Kings’ Shocking Downfall

IPL 2025: The Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the proud five-time IPL champions and perennial fan favourites, find themselves in uncharted waters this season. IPL 2025 has not been kind to the Men in Yellow.

From tactical blunders to a lack of firepower, the once-mighty franchise has slipped into a full-blown crisis. With six losses in eight games, they sit uncomfortably at the bottom of the table — a position more alien to them than a quiet Chepauk crowd.

IPL 2025 What Happened to CSK Inside Chennai Super Kings Shocking Downfall

So, what has really gone wrong with this iconic franchise? The problems, as it turns out, are both on and off the field — a tangled web of poor starts, strategic stubbornness, and ageing ideas in an evolving league.

Powerless Powerplay, Meek Middle Order

CSK's batting has been the biggest letdown in a season that’s quickly spiralling out of control. Known for their measured yet calculated approach, this year’s squad has looked more hesitant than heroic. The powerplay, once a platform for dominance, has become a patch of quicksand. CSK have the worst run rate in the powerplay among all teams — a damning statistic that highlights their inability to seize early momentum.

Worse still, they’ve cleared the ropes fewer times than any other team. In a tournament that now thrives on high-octane aggression, CSK's reluctance — or inability — to go big has hurt them. Barring the occasional fireworks from Shivam Dube, the middle order has flattered to deceive. Promising names have fizzled out, and the finishing prowess that once defined CSK's batting is conspicuously absent.

The musical chairs at the top haven’t helped either. With the opening pair changing almost every other match, stability — that golden hallmark of CSK’s past — has vanished. When your openers can't fire and your middle order can't rescue, chasing even average totals becomes an uphill battle.

Spin to Win? Not Anymore

If CSK's batting woes weren’t enough, their once-lethal bowling attack has lost its sting. Traditionally, their spinners turned matches at Chepauk into one-sided affairs. But this season, their spin attack has looked toothless. Even on helpful surfaces, they’ve failed to make an impact. In one particularly baffling move, a key spinner was dropped on a day when the pitch cried out for turn.

It’s not just the spinners. The pacers, meant to complement the spin unit, have struggled too — conceding runs in heaps and looking bereft of ideas in the death overs. As one commentator aptly put it, “CSK’s bowling this season has been more about hope than execution.”

Stuck in the Past: Strategy in Stagnation

What’s perhaps most alarming is CSK's apparent refusal to evolve. Their famed loyalty to players and tactics that served them well in previous seasons now looks like a double-edged sword. While other franchises are adapting to a faster, bolder T20 era, CSK seems shackled to an older blueprint. This has exposed them, especially against younger, more dynamic opponents.

Even their fortress — the MA Chidambaram Stadium — hasn’t been kind. The Chennai pitches, historically suited for spinners, have started assisting seamers, throwing CSK’s planning into disarray. Their home advantage has evaporated, and with it, a key part of their success formula.

Auction Missteps and Overreliance on Experience

CSK’s auction table strategy has come under severe scrutiny. Critics and former players alike have pointed fingers at the lack of aggressive buys, especially in the all-rounder and fast-bowling departments. There’s a feeling that the franchise overinvested in ageing spinners and overlooked match-winning young talent.

This has resulted in an unbalanced squad — one that’s not only short on firepower but also lacking the depth to rotate effectively. With some spinners benched, overseas players dropped to fix holes, and no clear match-winners emerging, the squad appears patchy at best.

Leadership Woes and the MS Factor

The season started with a fresh hope — Ruturaj Gaikwad, the promising opener, was handed the captaincy baton. But fate had other plans. An unfortunate elbow fracture ruled him out, and with little time for transition, the old warhorse was summoned once more.

MS Dhoni returned to lead CSK, much to the delight of fans. While his presence brings calm and confidence, his return also underscores just how much the team is still dependent on its past. It’s a romantic tale, yes — but is it sustainable? “MS coming back is nostalgic, but it also shows that Plan A failed — and we didn’t have a Plan B,” a former CSK player observed bluntly.

Chopping, Changing, and Chasing Stability

The constant changes in the playing XI further paint a picture of confusion. There’s been no settled combination, no clear pecking order, and no rhythm. Every match sees new faces and new strategies — a sign that the think tank is still searching for answers deep into the season.

Finding the right balance, especially in the overseas contingent, has been a challenge. Players are being shuffled out of position, roles are unclear, and the famed 'CSK clarity’ is missing.

Still Hope, But The Clock Is Ticking

Despite the gloom, CSK mathematically still have a slim shot at the playoffs — but they’ll need to win almost every remaining game and hope other results fall their way. But beyond numbers, it’s clear that something fundamental needs to change.

The 2025 campaign might end in heartbreak, but it should also serve as a loud wake-up call. The future of CSK cannot ride forever on past glories. As the rest of the IPL evolves at breakneck pace, it’s time for Chennai to refresh, reimagine, and rise once more.

Because if this season has proven anything, it's this: even legends can’t win if they don’t adapt.
