IPL 2025: Lucknow Super Giants have pulled off a smart mid-season signing by roping in New Zealand's rising fast bowler Will O'Rourke as a replacement for their injured pace spearhead, Mayank Yadav, for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season.
The news comes as a bittersweet twist for Super Giants fans. Mayank Yadav, who dazzled the cricketing world with his blistering pace earlier this year, has been ruled out of the tournament due to a back injury.

The 22-year-old returned from a long injury layoff and made an instant impact, dismissing Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya in a fiery spell against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede. He later featured against Punjab Kings in Dharamsala, showing glimpses of his old rhythm. Unfortunately, his IPL 2025 campaign has now been cut short.
Mayank, who broke through in IPL 2024 with searing pace and unplayable spells, claimed seven wickets in just four matches last season at an average of 12.14 and an economy of 6.99. This season, he added two more wickets in as many matches before injury struck once again.
In a bid to fill the void left by Mayank, the Super Giants have turned to Kiwi paceman Will O'Rourke, a rising star in international cricket. O'Rourke, who has already donned the New Zealand colours in all three formats, brings with him an impressive record - 36 wickets in 10 Tests, 22 wickets in 17 ODIs, and five scalps in as many T20Is.
The lanky right-armer, known for his control and bounce, joins the Lucknow squad at a reserve price of INR 3 crore. His arrival adds depth and international experience to the Super Giants' pace attack as they gear up for a crucial end to their league stage campaign.
With three games remaining, the Rishabh Pant-led Lucknow Super Giants still have their eyes set on a playoff berth. They face Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at home on May 19, travel to Ahmedabad to take on Gujarat Titans (GT) on May 22, and will wrap up their league fixtures against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Lucknow on May 27.
While Mayank's absence will certainly be felt - not just for his wickets, but also for the excitement he brought with each thunderbolt delivery - the Super Giants will be hopeful that O'Rourke can make a swift impact and keep their playoff hopes alive.
With the business end of the IPL heating up, all eyes will now be on how the Kiwi quick adapts to Indian conditions and fills in the big boots of one of India's most exciting fast-bowling talents.
