As the 2025 IPL season approaches, the excitement surrounding team preparations, player auctions, and management decisions is palpable. One of the key topics of discussion has been the status of coaching staff across teams, with most franchises already set with their support teams.
However, Delhi Capitals is the notable exception, currently lacking a head coach for the upcoming season. This scenario has emerged after the departure of their long-time coach, Ricky Ponting, marking a significant shift in the team's preparations for the next season.

Following his departure from Delhi Capitals, Ricky Ponting did not take long to find a new challenge. He has since been appointed as the head coach of Punjab Kings ahead of the IPL 2025 season. The Kings have brought in Ponting to rejuvenate their squad.
Ponting's experience and track record with Delhi makes him a valuable asset to Punjab Kings, who are looking for their first IPL title. Ponting took over at Delhi Capitals in 2018, a year in which the team ended last, but his influence began to pay off soon after.
In 2019, the Capitals finished third, followed by an appearance in their maiden IPL final in 2020, where they finished as runners-up against the dominant Mumbai Indians. In 2021, Delhi made it to the playoffs once again, showing consistency under Ponting's tenure.
However, in the subsequent seasons - 2022, 2023, and 2024, the team's form faltered, with the Capitals finishing 5th, 9th, and 6th, respectively. Ponting's time with the Capitals came to an end in 2024, after seven seasons with the franchise.
With Ponting now at Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals are in the process of finding a new head coach. While former Indian captain and cricketing legend Sourav Ganguly, currently serving as the Director of Cricket for the Capitals, expressed interest in taking on the role of head coach, there have been some reservations.
The team management is cautious about giving Ganguly dual responsibilities, citing concerns about the potential workload. The former India cricketer already oversees multiple teams under the franchise umbrella, including the Dubai Capitals in the ILT20 and the Pretoria Capitals in the SA20.
A source cited in the News18 report explained the hesitation: "Ganguly already has a lot of things on his plate - planning multiple things for the franchise as the Director of Cricket." This leaves the Delhi Capitals in a dilemma, as they seek a suitable candidate to fill the coaching void left by Ponting, without overburdening Ganguly.
As one of the three original IPL teams yet to win the tournament, Delhi Capitals are eager to find a coach who can take them to the next level. Despite their close finish in the 2020 season and playoff appearances in recent years, the lack of consistency remains a challenge.
The franchise will need to balance the experience and strategy of their new head coach with their vision for long-term success, all while ensuring that the burden does not fall solely on Ganguly's shoulders.
As of now, the Capitals are led by their captain Rishabh Pant, who has shown great promise despite injury concerns in recent seasons. The rest of the coaching team includes batting coach Pravin Amre, bowling coach James Hopes, and fielding coach Biju George.
Parth Jindal, one of the co-owners, continues to play an active role in team management alongside Siddharth Bhasin, the team's manager. The franchise is well-supported by its joint owners, JSW Sports and GMR Sports. However, with a vacant coaching position, all eyes are on the Capitals' next move as they aim to finalize their support staff before the 2025 IPL season begins.
