Tensions flared at the Narendra Modi Stadium during the closing moments of Delhi Capitals' innings in Match 35 of IPL 2025 on Saturday, as Gujarat Titans' head coach Ashish Nehra and captain Shubman Gill were seen in a heated exchange with the on-field umpires.
The confrontation stemmed from a penalty imposed on the Titans for not maintaining the required over rate.

Delhi Capitals had posted a competitive total of 203/8 in their 20 overs, riding on impactful knocks from Karun Nair (31 off 18), Axar Patel (39 off 32), and Ashutosh Sharma (37 off 19). But it was the final over of the innings that drew the most attention-not for the runs scored, but for the controversy surrounding it.
The drama unfolded right after veteran pacer Ishant Sharma completed the 19th over. Having earlier walked off the field due to dehydration in the searing Ahmedabad heat, Ishant returned to finish bowl his third over and even took a wicket.
However, after delivering his final ball, he again exited the field, leading to confusion over his substitution. Gujarat brought in Sherfane Rutherford as their Impact Player, raising eyebrows on whether the change was within the regulations.
Amid the uncertainty, the umpires communicated that Gujarat Titans had failed to complete their overs in the allotted time, triggering the slow over rate penalty. According to IPL guidelines, teams falling short of the over-rate requirement must operate with only four fielders outside the 30-yard circle in the final over. As a result, left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore had to bowl the 20th with restricted field placements.
The decision didn't sit well with GT's think tank. Both Nehra and Gill were visibly animated as they sought clarification from the umpires. The debate delayed the final over slightly but the officials stood firm on enforcing the penalty.
Despite the on-field tension, Ishant Sharma's short but gutsy spell (2.5-0-19-1) was one of the highlights for GT, as he battled through extreme conditions to deliver for his team.
With DC setting a steep target of 204, all eyes are now on how Gujarat Titans respond, especially after a heated end to the first innings.
