IPL 2025: Why Did Rohit Sharma Receive a Special Award from BCCI President Roger Binny Before MI vs SRH Clash?

IPL 2025: The crowd erupted in applause. The cameras zoomed in. And standing at the centre of it all was Rohit Sharma – calm, composed, and glowing with legacy.

Just minutes before the 33rd match of IPL 2025 between Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad, a heartfelt moment played out at the Wankhede.

IPL 2025 Why Did Rohit Sharma Receive a Special Award from BCCI President Roger Binny Before MI vs SRH Clash

BCCI President Roger Binny stepped forward and presented Rohit Sharma with a special memento, marking 18 uninterrupted seasons in the Indian Premier League – a feat only a handful of legends can boast of.

Why Was Rohit Sharma Honoured?

Rohit Sharma, the Mumbai Indians stalwart and former captain, has been a towering figure in the IPL ever since its inception in 2008. Having played all 18 seasons without a break, he stands shoulder-to-shoulder with giants like MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli in terms of longevity and commitment to the league. As the IPL celebrated its remarkable journey, it was only fitting to honour one of its greatest contributors.

The IPL, through its official handle, summed it up with a crisp caption that resonated across social media: "18 seasons 1 Legacy. Rohit Sharma of the Mumbai Indians receives a special memento from BCCI President, Mr. Roger Binny."

From Deccan to Dynasty: Rohit’s IPL Evolution

Rohit’s IPL story began with the Deccan Chargers, where he clinched his maiden title in 2009. But it was in 2011 when he was picked up by the Mumbai Indians that his true journey began. His appointment as captain in 2013 changed the franchise’s fortunes forever. Replacing Ricky Ponting at the helm, Rohit led MI to their first title that very season – and added four more trophies in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.

His leadership, calm under pressure, and clutch performances earned him the tag of "Captain Cool 2.0." Although he was removed from captaincy before the 2024 season, making way for Hardik Pandya, Rohit's legacy remains untouched.

Not in Playing XI, Yet at the Centre of It All

Interestingly, Rohit wasn’t part of MI's playing XI against SRH but was named among the Impact Players. As Hardik Pandya led the side and opted to bowl first after winning the toss, Rohit's presence was still felt – not just on the field, but in the hearts of fans and the history of the league.

An Elite Club of 18-Season Veterans

Joining Rohit in the 18-season club are Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, and Manish Pandey. Kohli has remained loyal to Royal Challengers Bengaluru, becoming the only player to represent a single franchise every season. Dhoni has been synonymous with Chennai Super Kings, barring two seasons with Rising Pune Super Giant. Pandey, meanwhile, has travelled across multiple franchises and is now with Kolkata Knight Riders – where he played a memorable 94-run knock to win them the IPL 2014 final.

Legacy Beyond Trophies

Rohit Sharma’s career is a masterclass in consistency, leadership, and commitment. While the IPL has evolved over the years with new stars rising, Rohit’s contributions remain etched in golden letters. From lifting trophies to nurturing young talent, from elegant pulls to match-winning knocks – Rohit has done it all.

As Roger Binny handed him the memento, fans were reminded that in a league of ever-changing dynamics, Rohit Sharma has remained a timeless constant.

"A memento for memories, a gesture for greatness."
