Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have been forced into a crucial change midway through the IPL 2025 season as speedster Mayank Yadav has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament.
The franchise has signed New Zealand pacer William O'Rourke as his replacement for ₹3 crore, as it was announced on Thursday (May 15).

O'Rourke, a promising fast bowler from New Zealand, is known for his sharp pace and bounce off the deck. The tall right-arm quick has already represented New Zealand across formats and is now set for his maiden IPL stint. LSG will be hoping he can bring fresh energy to their bowling unit as they push for a playoff berth in the closing stretch of the season.
Mayank's exit comes as a significant blow for the franchise. He had created a buzz during the previous season with his express pace, consistently clocking speeds over 150 kmph. Expectations were high upon his return this year, especially after missing the 2024-25 domestic season due to fitness issues.
He made a brief comeback in IPL 2025, featuring in two matches-against Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings. However, his performances failed to meet expectations, with his outing against Punjab proving costly as he conceded 60 runs in four overs-equalling the worst bowling figures by an LSG player in IPL history.
It has now emerged that Mayank's IPL 2025 campaign was cut short due to a recurrence of the back injury that had previously sidelined him. The discomfort resurfaced after the Punjab game, prompting LSG and the medical team to take a cautious approach. He has since returned to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru to begin a new phase of rehabilitation.
There is currently no definitive timeline on his return, but the injury raises broader concerns about his long-term workload management and career trajectory. For now, LSG will need to move forward with O'Rourke, as Mayank indulges himself into the road for recovery yet again.
