IPL 2025: Why BCCI Announcement of Match Fee is a Golden Goose for Uncapped Players

Jay Shah has ushered in a new phase for the Indian Premier League (IPL) with a historic announcement on Saturday (September 28). The BCCI secretary revealed the introduction of a match-based salary system for players from IPL 2025.

The IPL franchises will now allocate Rs 12.60 crore as match fees for the entire season. Each player participating in a match will receive Rs 7.5 lakh, which is separate from their original contract amount. This means that if a player participates in all matches for their franchise during an IPL tournament, they could earn an additional Rs 1.05 crore as match fees.

Jay Shah expressed excitement about this change, stating, "In a historic move to celebrate consistency and champion outstanding performances in the #IPL, we are thrilled to introduce a match fee of INR 7.5 lakhs per game for our cricketers! A cricketer playing all league matches in a season will get Rs. 1.05 crores in addition to his contracted amount. Each franchise will allocate INR 12.60 crores as match fees for the season! This is a new era for the #IPL and our players."

This introduction of match fees marks a pivotal moment in IPL history as it continues to expand its influence within cricket. It means the players will get an incentive along with their contract amount for the season.

The new Match Fee - A Golden Goose for Uncapped Players

As the BCCI announced the news, the uncapped players and some of the fringe players will have a massive boost. A match-based salary of Rs 7.5 lakh means an uncapped player will have a chance to win more than five times of his contracted salary if he plays all the matches for the team and is sold on his base price in the auction.

For uncapped players bought at their base price of Rs 20 Lakh, this presents an opportunity to earn significantly more if they play all matches in the season, which will give impetus to many youngsters to perform and try and break into the first team.

Also astonishingly, a player bought for Rs 20 lakh will surpass his contract value if he plays three IPL matches, which will accumulate to a total of Rs 22.5 lakh.

The new system applies only to group-stage matches, which consist of 14 games in total. It remains uncertain whether this fee structure will extend into the playoffs. This change could potentially impact how players approach each game and their overall earnings throughout the season.

IPL has been the conveyor belt of some outstanding talents which have rolled out since its inception. BCCI has been benevolent to the players as it keeps on reaching new financial levels, and the newest introduction will further solidify the players' causes.
