IPL 2025: Why were PBKS and DC not Awarded a Point after Dharamshala Match got Abandoned? Explained

By MyKhel Staff

The IPL 2025 has seen an unprecedented hiatus amid the geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan.

The match between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC), held at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on May 8, was abruptly abandoned due to security concerns arising from escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.

Why were PBKS and DC not Awarded a Point after Dharamshala Match got Abandoned Explained

Amid the current unrest between the two neighbouring nations, the match was called off immediately for precautionary security measures.

The match commenced after a 90-minute delay caused by rain and a wet outfield. PBKS had reached a commanding position at 122 for 1 in 10.1 overs, with Priyansh Arya scoring a rapid 70 and Prabhsimran Singh remaining unbeaten on 50. However, a sudden power outage led to the malfunctioning of floodlights, prompting officials to escort players off the field and evacuate the stadium.

IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal stated that the match was called off as a "precautionary step" in light of recent incidents in Jammu and the issuance of a red alert in the region.

IPL 2025 Suspended for a Week

In response to the deteriorating security situation, the BCCI announced the suspension of the IPL 2025 season for one week, effective immediately. This decision affects the remaining 12 league matches and the subsequent playoffs. The BCCI will assess the situation in consultation with relevant authorities before announcing a revised schedule.

IPL 2025: Why PBKS and DC didn't get a Point

The match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals was abandoned, but the interesting point is that neither team received any points and the match was not even counted.

Generally, an abandoned match in the IPL means the two involved teams get a point each, and the match is also counted. But in this case, the teams haven't received a point, which indicates BCCI's approach.

It is understood that as the match was called off for security reasons and was forced to end even before the stipulated time, it will be considered a null and void encounter. It is also assumable that if the IPL 2025 resumes in the coming weeks, the match between Punjab and Delhi may be played again. It is not yet confirmed if the fixture will be played from scratch, but the two teams are likely to lock horns again.
