England Test captain Ben Stokes is reportedly set to skip the IPL 2025 season, opting to focus on his red-ball commitments and workload management.
The decision aligns with a packed 2025 schedule for England, which includes the ICC Champions Trophy, a home Test series against India, and a marquee Ashes series in Australia at year-end.

Stokes, who has battled recurring injuries in recent years, aims to stay fresh for these crucial red-ball assignments, especially with the high-stakes Ashes series in mind.
As per media reports, Ben Stokes, who has battled recurring injuries in recent years, is skipping IPL 2025 to stay fresh for the upcoming crucial red-ball assignments, especially with the high-stakes Ashes series in mind.
Stokes joined Chennai Super Kings in 2023 but was limited to two appearances due to a knee injury. He already missed the 2024 IPL season to prioritise his Test career. According to reports from The Telegraph, he is unlikely to register for the 2025 mega auction, given his commitment to England's Test schedule.
However, a recent IPL regulation by the BCCI might complicate Stokes’ options. This rule mandates that any overseas player who skips the IPL 2025 mega auction will be banned from participating in the following season's auction, potentially making Stokes ineligible for the IPL until 2027 if he decides to sit out.
“Any Overseas Player will have to register for the Big Auction. In case the overseas player doesn’t register, then he will be ineligible to register in the following year’s player auction,” the new rule reads.
If Ben Stokes ultimately makes himself unavailable for the IPL 2025 mega auction, he will automatically be ineligible for the IPL 2026 mini auction. However, Stokes, who has not been a part of any IPL side since being released by CSK after IPL 2023, will not be hit by a two-year ban that comes from another new BCCI policy.
According to the BCCI’s latest auction policy, any overseas player who registers for the auction but then withdraws from the tournament without a specific reason may face a ban of up to two IPL seasons.
“Any player who registers in the player auction and after getting picked at the auction, makes himself unavailable before the start of the season, will get banned from participating in the tournament and player auction for 2 Seasons,” the second rule said.
Despite his recent injury problem, had Ben Stokes taken part in the IPL 2025 mega auction, franchises might have opted to sign him due to his match-winning abilities, particularly in high-pressure situations.
Known for his heroics in ICC tournaments, Stokes' presence has often been a game-changer; he played a pivotal role in England’s 2019 ODI World Cup win and the 2022 T20 World Cup final. However, since his primary focus remains on red-ball cricket, his absence from the IPL might open opportunities for other all-rounders while securing his availability for critical Test series.
