Umran Malik has joined the Kolkata Knight Riders in the middle of the IPL 2025 season, the franchise confirmed on Friday (April 25).
The Jammu and Kashmir pacer has been officially ruled out of the IPL 2025 season due to a hip injury. Despite initial optimism about his recovery, Malik did not receive medical clearance to participate in the tournament.

Consequently, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have named left-arm pacer Chetan Sakariya as his replacement. Sakariya, who has previously represented India in limited-overs formats and played 19 IPL matches, joins KKR for Rs 75 lakh.
Umran Malik will not be playing for KKR in their IPL 2025 match Punjab Kings on Saturday (April 26). Malik has joined the KKR squad in Kolkata to continue his rehabilitation and "return to cricket" programme.
While not an official playing member, he will work closely with the team's support staff to regain full fitness. The J&K speedster is expected to be a part of the Knight Riders squad in the IPL 2026 as well. Although Chetan Sakariya was roped in as replacement, the left-arm pacer is likely to be released ahead of the IPL 2026 auction.
KKR are currently struggling this season. The Knight Riders, who are the defending champions, have won only three of their eight matches so far this season.
