As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season approaches its critical playoff phase, Punjab Kings (PBKS) have been dealt a significant blow with the injury of their premier leg-spinner, Yuzvendra Chahal.
Chahal's absence was notably felt during PBKS's recent match against Delhi Capitals, where he was not part of the playing XI or the Impact Players list. This raised immediate concerns about his fitness and availability for the crucial final stage of the tournament.

Assistant coach Sunil Joshi confirmed that Chahal was sidelined due to a "small niggle," noting that the decision to rest him was precautionary.
"Chahal has a small niggle, so we are just resting him. That's the idea," Joshi said.
While the specifics of the injury remain undisclosed, it is understood that Chahal has been managing a shoulder issue. Despite the setback, he had previously delivered a match-winning performance while carrying the same injury, picking up 4 wickets for 28 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders and earning the Player of the Match award.
In his absence, PBKS handed a chance to Praveen Dubey, who struggled to make an impression, conceding 20 runs in just two overs without claiming a wicket. The void left by Chahal's absence was clearly felt, emphasizing his importance in the spin bowling department.
Sunil Joshi has frequently highlighted Chahal's mental toughness and match awareness. Earlier in the season, Joshi remarked, "Big match players don't need to be reminded of what they are capable of. They can always make a difference. It's just the confidence and bowling in the right areas that help them perform strongly."
With the playoffs nearing, PBKS will be hoping for Chahal's swift recovery. His presence in the team not only enhances the bowling attack but also adds crucial experience and control in the middle overs-elements that become vital in knockout matches.
The decision to rest him appears strategic, aimed at ensuring he is fully fit for the business end of the tournament. As the team eyes a deep run in the playoffs, all eyes will be on Chahal's fitness status in the coming days. Although it is not clear when Chahal will return to action, Punjab Kings will definitely be banking on his experience as they take part in the playoffs after 11 years.
