Why will Cameron Green get only Rs 18 Crore despite being sold to KKR for Rs 25.2 Crore?

Cameron Green has been sold to Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2026 auction for a mammoth Rs 25.20 crore.

The Knight Riders were in the hunt for Green from the start, and managed to acquire him for a whopping price, despite the long battle from Chennai Super Kings.

Despite getting that massive amount in the auction, Cameron Green will only earn Rs 18 crore from the mini auction.

Why will Cameron Green only earn Rs 18 crore?

BCCI introduced the "maximum fee rule" for IPL 2026 mini-auction to cap overseas player earnings at Rs 18 crore. This prevents salary inflation in non-mega auctions where fewer slots spark bidding wars.

The cap equals the highest retention slab (Rs 18 crore), lower than the prior mega-auction peak of Rs 27 crore for Rishabh Pant. Bids can exceed Rs 18 crore, but excess goes to BCCI's player welfare fund; franchises deduct the full bid from their purse.

Franchises face real costs for high bids without extra player value, curbing overspending on stars like Cameron Green. Indian players face no cap and if any Indian player goes past the Rs 18 crore, they will earn the exact amount they are bought for.
