IPL 2026 Biggest Flops: Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya and the Stars Who Failed to Deliver
Every IPL season creates heroes. IPL 2026 certainly had plenty of those, from Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's record-breaking Orange Cap campaign to Royal Challengers Bengaluru's successful title defence. But for every breakout star, there were a handful of big names who endured forgettable seasons.
Whether due to poor form, injuries, leadership struggles or the burden of enormous auction price tags, several marquee players finished IPL 2026 well short of expectations.

Rishabh Pant: The ₹27 Crore Gamble That Never Paid Off
No player entered IPL 2026 under greater scrutiny than Rishabh Pant.
Lucknow Super Giants shattered the IPL auction record to sign him for ₹27 crore, making him the most expensive player in league history. Pant was expected to lead LSG's revival and anchor their batting order.
Instead, the season unravelled quickly.
Pant managed just 189 runs while struggling for rhythm and consistency. His strike rate remained below the levels expected from a modern T20 superstar, and his inability to produce match-winning knocks became symbolic of LSG's wider problems.
The disappointment was compounded when reports emerged of Pant stepping down as captain, capping one of the most underwhelming seasons of his IPL career.
Cameron Green Failed to Justify Historic Price Tag
Kolkata Knight Riders made Cameron Green the most expensive overseas player in IPL history at ₹25.20 crore.
The Australian all-rounder arrived with a reputation as a three-dimensional match-winner capable of changing games with both bat and ball.
While Green had occasional moments, his overall returns fell far below expectations.
He scored 322 runs in 14 matches and struggled to make meaningful contributions with the ball, conceding runs at an expensive rate throughout the season.
For a player commanding such a massive salary, KKR needed much more.
Hardik Pandya's Difficult Season Continues
Few players endured a tougher IPL 2026 than Hardik Pandya.
The Mumbai Indians captain never managed to establish momentum with either bat or ball. He averaged around 20 with the bat, picked up only four wickets and regularly found himself targeted by opposition batters.
The team's struggles amplified the pressure.
Mumbai failed to reach the playoffs despite possessing one of the strongest squads on paper, and questions surrounding Hardik's captaincy only intensified as the season progressed.
What was supposed to be a bounce-back year instead became another difficult chapter in a turbulent period for the all-rounder.
Suryakumar Yadav's Rare Off-Year
For several years, Suryakumar Yadav has been one of the most feared T20 batters in world cricket.
IPL 2026 was different.
The Mumbai Indians star never found his trademark fluency and finished with just 183 runs, averaging around 20. The fearless strokeplay that has defined his career rarely appeared, leaving MI without one of their most important match-winners.
Given his importance to both franchise and country, it was one of the most surprising downturns of the season.
Ruturaj Gaikwad Could Not Rescue CSK
Chennai Super Kings have often relied on Ruturaj Gaikwad to provide stability at the top of the order.
This season, however, consistency deserted him.
Gaikwad struggled to convert starts into substantial innings and failed to provide the sort of leadership and run-scoring output that CSK needed to challenge for a playoff place.
While not as dramatic as some of the other disappointments on this list, his subdued campaign played a role in Chennai's inability to mount a serious title challenge.
IPL 2026: The Biggest Team Disappointments
Lucknow Super Giants
No franchise underperformed more dramatically.
Built around expensive stars and expected to challenge for the title, LSG instead finished at the bottom of the table. Frequent batting collapses, leadership uncertainty and inconsistent bowling ensured they became the first side eliminated from playoff contention.
Mumbai Indians
Mumbai entered the season with championship ambitions but never looked like genuine contenders.
The poor form of Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav hurt the side significantly, while their Indian core failed to produce the performances expected of a five-time champion franchise.
Delhi Capitals
Delhi's campaign featured some of the season's lowest lows.
Their batting collapsed to just 75 all out in one match, the lowest team total of IPL 2026, and despite remaining mathematically alive until the final stages of the league phase, they never looked convincing playoff contenders.
Failure Is Relative
Calling these players "flops" comes with an important caveat.
Most remain among the most talented cricketers in the world and have proven records at both international and IPL level. Expectations for stars such as Pant, Hardik, Green and Suryakumar are naturally much higher than for ordinary players.
That is why their struggles stood out so sharply.
In a season remembered for Sooryavanshi's brilliance, Virat Kohli's consistency and RCB's title defence, IPL 2026 also served as a reminder that even the biggest stars can endure difficult campaigns.
