IPL 2026: From Delhi Grounds To Mumbai Indians - Mayank Rawat's Long Wait Ends | Exclusive

Some IPL stories are loud. This one is calm, slow, and honest. Mumbai Indians spending ₹30 lakh on Delhi all-rounder Mayank Rawat will not shake headlines. But it says something deeper about Indian cricket that steady work still finds a way.

At 26, Mayank will play the IPL for the first time. He arrives not as hype, but as proof. Proof that domestic cricket still rewards those who stay the course.

IPL 2026 From Delhi Grounds To Mumbai Indians - Mayank Rawat s Long Wait Ends Exclusive

What makes this moment special is not just the team he joins Mumbai Indians but the journey behind it. And at the centre of that journey stands his coach, Rajesh Nagar.

"Yes, when we came to Lucknow to play in the tournament, we were sitting in our room and watching the auction. When Mayank's name came up, we were obviously very happy. It brought back a lot of old memories."

Those memories go back more than a decade.

"He has been with me since 2011. Since then, we have been training him continuously. He also studied in our school, where we supported him through the sports department."

Mayank's rise was never smooth. Big scores came early. Chances did not.

"In the Under-14 level in Delhi, he scored 220 runs against Haryana, and later scored 244 runs in another match... Despite scoring the highest number of runs... he did not make the team the following year."

For years, doors stayed shut. Performances dipped. The waiting stretched.

"He didn't get many opportunities for the next 4-5 years and had a run of low scores, but he kept working hard."

Then came the Delhi Premier League. And suddenly, selectors were watching again. Mumbai Indians noticed.

His coach expected it. "Yes, I expected it this time."

The call after the auction said everything.

"I spoke to him after the auction. He said, 'Thank you so much for selecting me. You helped me a lot. I always wanted to be with you.'"

Now comes the biggest classroom of all. Sharing space with Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Surya, Bumrah.

"This will be a huge learning experience for Mayank... when you get a chance to play in such a team... you learn so much."

Mayank Rawat's IPL story is not about instant success. It is about staying ready. About trusting the grind. About a coach who never stopped believing.

If he gets his chance, Rajesh Nagar is clear "Mayank is a brilliant player... If he gets an opportunity, he will definitely do well." Sometimes, the quiet stories matter the most.
