Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the TATA IPL 2026 season opener at M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday. Head Coach Andy Flower said the team enters with a fresh outlook, treating the campaign as a new test despite last year's title win.
Flower said, "Of course we are the holders from last year, but this is a brand new year and we're all looking forward to the challenge." He noted that players are older, opponents have evolved and conditions could change across the tournament.

Flower recalled that RCB lost their first three matches at Chinnaswamy last season. He said the group studied those games and the surface. He added that regular practice and talks on conditions should help them read their home pitch better than visiting teams.
Flower praised captain Rajat Patidar and vice captain Jitesh Sharma for their work with the group. "It's pretty amazing that in Rajat's first year of captaincy he led RCB to the trophy. He's a very likeable man and he's well respected in the dressing room," Flower said.
On Virat Kohli, Flower expressed full trust in the senior batter's shape. "Virat is in a really good space mentally. He's very comfortable with himself but still incredibly hungry and watching him strike the ball in training, he looks at the peak of his powers," Flower said.
Flower highlighted depth in domestic pace options, naming Rasikh, Mangesh and Abhinandan. "We're happy with the Indian seamers in the squad. Rasikh is a better bowler than he was last year, and he's worked very hard on his game," he said about the pace group.
| Seamer | Update from Andy Flower |
|---|---|
| Rasikh | Better than last year after hard work |
| Mangesh | New recruit, seen as a strong addition |
| Abhinandan | Recent progress has encouraged the staff |
Flower said all three have the skills to compete if chances come. He added that the staff see them as ready for roles throughout the long season.
Flower also gave an update on Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood. "Hazlewood arrived yesterday, and he's looking fit. It's great to have him back around the dressing room and involved in our meetings again. He won't be ready for tomorrow because he's just arrived," Flower said.
RCB will play its first match of IPL 2026 against SRH on the opening day of the 19th edition of the IPL 2026 at the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
