IPL 2026: ‘You Can't Win Competitions If You're That Inconsistent' - Ian Bell Admits Delhi Capitals Must Improve Batting Stability
Delhi Capitals batting coach Ian Bell admitted the franchise's inconsistency has hurt their IPL 2026 campaign as DC prepare for a crucial clash against Rajasthan Royals.
Speaking ahead of the match, Bell reflected on Delhi's unpredictable performances this season, pointing out how the side has swung between explosive highs and dramatic collapses.

"We scored 265 here and then followed that up by getting bowled out for 70," Bell said. "You can't win competitions if you're that inconsistent and I think we have to accept that reality."
The former England batter acknowledged that Delhi have struggled to turn their home ground into a fortress and stressed the need to finish strongly in their remaining matches.
Ian Bell Says Delhi Need Greater Stability in Batting
Bell identified instability in the batting order as one of the biggest reasons behind DC's inconsistent results this season.
According to him, the top IPL teams have benefited from settled batting combinations, something Delhi have lacked throughout the campaign.
"When you look at the top four teams at the moment, there is a lot of consistency in the batting line-up, certainly in the top four," Bell said.
The coach praised KL Rahul for his performances this season, particularly his improved strike rate, but added that other batters need to contribute more consistently.
"KL has again had a fantastic year. He's increased his strike rate, which is what a lot of people asked him to do."
Bell also backed aggressive middle-order players like Ashutosh Sharma and David Miller, calling them dangerous match-winners when in rhythm.
However, he admitted that no batter apart from Rahul has fully cemented a permanent spot through performances.
"I don't think anyone quite yet has made himself undroppable by performance."
Delhi Capitals Want Strong Finish Despite Pressure
Despite the mixed results, Bell insisted the atmosphere inside the Delhi dressing room remains positive and focused.
The former England batter stressed that representing Delhi Capitals comes with responsibility, particularly in front of home supporters. "When we're representing Delhi Capitals, we have a responsibility to go out there and put in the best performance we have."
Bell said the team's focus remains on maintaining positivity around training while delivering strong performances in the final stages of the season.
Ian Bell Calls Vaibhav Sooryavanshi a 'Scary Talent'
Bell also spoke glowingly about young Rajasthan Royals batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi, describing him as a rare young talent capable of dominating games.
"He's a fantastic young player, isn't he? The talent is absolutely scary," Bell said. The DC batting coach admitted Rajasthan's rising star would be a key wicket for Delhi's bowlers.
"When you play Rajasthan Royals, I think he's the prized wicket and you want to get him out early."
Bell also predicted a bright future for the youngster, crediting the guidance around him at Rajasthan Royals. "I'm sure it's only a matter of time before we see him with India as well."
Ian Bell Explains Modern T20 Batting Philosophy
Discussing the changing nature of T20 cricket, Bell said modern teams must play with aggression but also adapt intelligently to different surfaces.
"Plan A is to be ultra aggressive," he explained.
At the same time, Bell admitted that Delhi have not adapted well enough to slower or tackier conditions at home.
"The best teams can adapt. That's where we have to be better, certainly here at home."
The former England batter made it clear that safe cricket is no longer enough in modern T20s.
"You're not going to win T20 cricket anymore by playing safe and building foundation."
Ian Bell Backs Axar Patel and Praises KL Rahul's Evolution
Bell also defended Axar Patel during his difficult phase with bat and ball, calling him one of the most important players for both Delhi Capitals and India in T20 cricket.
"He's an important player not just for this franchise, but for India as well in T20 cricket."
The DC coach praised Axar's attitude and character, saying the team continues to fully support him.
Bell also reserved special praise for KL Rahul's evolution as a T20 batter.
According to Bell, Rahul has consciously adapted his game to meet the demands of modern T20 cricket.
"We know he can score a volume of runs, but can he slightly take that game further towards where T20 cricket is going now?"
"I think he's proven to everyone that he can do that."
Bell compared Rahul's hunger for improvement to elite players like Virat Kohli, highlighting the batter's work ethic behind the scenes.
"After playing so much cricket, they still want to improve and get better. That shows the hunger and desire."
As Delhi Capitals approach the business end of IPL 2026, Bell's comments offered a candid reflection of a campaign defined by flashes of brilliance, inconsistency, and a desperate push to finish strongly.
