IPL 2026: Leadership Gaps, Identity Crisis - Experts Break Down KKR's Key Challenges

Kolkata Knight Riders head into the Indian Premier League 2026 with multiple concerns after a below-par campaign last year. With Abhishek Nayar taking charge as head coach, experts believe the franchise must address deeper structural issues - particularly leadership, continuity, and team identity.

Speaking on JioStar's IPL Today Live, Faf du Plessis and Aakash Chopra dissected KKR's challenges, breaking them down into key areas.

Gambhir's Competitive Edge Missing

Faf du Plessis first highlighted what former team mentor Gautam Gambhir brought to KKR - a fierce competitive culture. Under Gambhir and Shreyas Iyer's leadership, the franchise lifted their third title in IPL 2024 edition.

"He's always the villain in the story when it comes to playing against him, but you respect that... "He's so competitive... he does not worry for one second about being liked by anyone," Du Plessis said on JioStar.

"His job as a leader is to set high standards and have accountability within the dressing room."

According to du Plessis, this uncompromising mindset made KKR a stronger unit. "From a leadership perspective, KKR with him was a stronger team," former South Africa cricketer added.

Leadership Is a System, Not Just a Captain

Breaking down leadership further, du Plessis - who has led Royal Challengers Bengaluru for two seasons - stressed that success comes from a strong structure, not just an individual. "People always think of the Captain... but for me, it runs down from the top - owners, coach, and the leadership group."

The former Protea explained how successful teams build a support system around the captain. "When you look at successful teams like MI, CSK, and KKR, there's a Gautam with a Shreyas Iyer, or a Dhoni with a Fleming."

He also pointed out the importance of coaching strength when captaincy is inexperienced.

"If you don't have a strong captain, that's when a strong Coach steps in... and that's where Gambhir was so effective."

Continuity Still a Big Question

Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra shifted focus to continuity, calling it a key missing piece in KKR's setup. "It can't just be one season here and there, because that doesn't allow an identity to be built."

He emphasised the need for clarity in team-building. "You need clarity on who you're building the team around and a clear philosophy."

While acknowledging KKR's effort to retain a core, he flagged inconsistency in leadership. "They've lacked a consistent leader."

Chopra also highlighted the contrast with the Gambhir era. "When Gautam was there, he had a free hand... he knew what he was doing and committed completely to it."

"In his absence, there hasn't been that continuity."

Captaincy Uncertainty Adds Pressure

Chopra pointed to uncertainty around leadership within the current squad. "They won with Shreyas Iyer and then let him go. Now they're back to figuring out who the next Captain should be."

This lack of clarity, he suggested, impacts team identity and long-term planning.

Nayar Faces a Tough First Assignment

On Abhishek Nayar, Chopra broke down the scale of the challenge. "This is Abhishek Nayar's first big assignment... the IPL is a different beast altogether."

He also questioned the authority of the current leadership group. "He now takes over... with a Captain who is not commanding the same amount of respect."

Further, he pointed out how the captaincy situation unfolded. "Ajinkya wasn't the original captaincy choice... he was given the captaincy because they couldn't find anybody else."

Tactical Concerns Remain

Beyond leadership, Chopra flagged on-field concerns, especially in bowling. "They'll have to be tactically smart to repeat past success, especially with a bowling attack that looks weak."
