IPL 2026: LPG Shortage Forces Caterers To Shift To Electric Cooking, Train Staff Ahead of Season Opener

IPL 2026: The ongoing West Asia conflict has led to an LPG shortage, prompting caterers across the country to shift towards electric cooking methods and traditional fuels like coal and wood. This transition is also affecting those preparing food for the broadcasting crew during the upcoming IPL 2026.

One such catering firm, responsible for serving nearly 200 broadcast personnel, including commentators, is facing a unique challenge. Since most of its 13-14 workers are accustomed to gas stoves, they are currently being trained to safely operate electric appliances such as induction stoves, hot plates, and electric tandoors.

"The workers first need to know how to use these appliances, so we are training them at the moment. More than anything it's important for their safety," the caterer said, quoted the New Indian Express.

"At least one of us, who are well versed with these appliances, remains present whenever the workers prepare food using electrical appliances. This way, we are not only fulfilling the local orders but also imparting training to the workers. By the time the IPL matches are held, I hope the workers will be fully trained," the caterer added.

The shift has also impacted the menu. Gas-intensive items like fried foods and tawa rotis may be limited, with alternatives such as tandoori rotis and grilled dishes taking their place. The caterer revealed that about 70% of operations have already moved to electric appliances, with increased reliance on coal further reducing LPG usage.

"We have switched 70 per cent of our operations to electric appliances. We have bought induction stoves, electric hot plates and electric tandoors. Anyway, we have been using coal to prepare a few items in the past. The only difference this time will be that the (coal) fuel will be used more now. So now the LPG consumption will be reduced considerably," the caterer said.

No formal directives have been issued by organisers regarding LPG consumption; however, these adjustments have been made proactively to manage the ongoing fuel shortage.

When Will IPL 2026 Start?

The 19th edition of the Indian Premier League will start on March 28 with the first match scheduled to take place between defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
