IPL 2026: Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya sanctioned by BCCI, Reason Revealed
In a dramatic turn during the IPL 2026 season, Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya was penalised by the BCCI after a heated incident in Match 65 against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
The all-rounder was fined 10% of his match fee and handed one demerit point for breaching Level 1 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct.

KKR vs MI: Why is Hardik Pandya Sanctioned?
The episode occurred in the second innings during the fourth ball of the 10th over. A visibly frustrated Pandya, while walking back to his mark after delivering a ball, forcefully knocked the bails off the stumps. The act was deemed an “abuse of cricket equipment” under the IPL Code of Conduct.
Pandya admitted the offence and accepted the sanction imposed by the Match Referee without appeal.
The match summed up Mumbai Indians’ disappointing campaign. KKR, opting to bowl first, restricted MI to 147/8. Despite Hardik’s return alongside Suryakumar Yadav, the visitors could not post a challenging total.
KKR chased the target comfortably in 18.5 overs, winning by 4 wickets. Manish Pandey’s composed 45 and a crucial partnership with Rovman Powell helped the home side secure a vital victory, boosting their playoff hopes.
This latest disciplinary action adds to the mounting pressure on Hardik Pandya, who has faced criticism for Mumbai Indians’ inconsistent performances this season. The team currently sits near the bottom of the points table with just a handful of wins.
Fans and experts have mixed reactions. While some view the incident as a momentary lapse in the high-pressure T20 environment, others see it as a sign of growing frustration within the MI camp.
The Indian quartet of Mumbai Indians have collectively underperformed in this IPL 2026 season, which is summed up by their position in the points table, as they are already eliminated from the competition.
