IPL 2026: Royal Challengers Bengaluru may still revolve around Virat Kohli, but the franchise is no longer overly dependent on its talisman, according to AB de Villiers and Anil Kumble.
Speaking on JioStar's 'IPL Today Live', the former RCB stars highlighted how the team has evolved into a more balanced unit-one capable of challenging for multiple titles in succession ahead of Indian Premier League 2026.

RCB and IPL legend De Villiers believes the Bengaluru-based side are now in a phase where sustained success is possible, even hinting at a dominant run in the coming years.
"I feel RCB are in that zone now where they can go bang, bang, bang-perhaps two or three trophies in a row," said de Villiers, who has played 150-plus games for RCB.
While Kohli remains the heartbeat of the franchise, de Villiers stressed that last season's success, under newly appointed captain Rajat Patidar, was built on collective contributions rather than individual brilliance.
The legendary cricketer from South Africa - who has played 184 IPL games and scored 5100-plus runs in the league - pointed to the IPL 2025 final as a defining example, where contributions from players like Rajat Patidar, Liam Livingstone, Jitesh Sharma and Romario Shepherd powered RCB to a winning total, despite Kohli playing a relatively measured knock.
De Villiers reiterated that Kohli's influence goes beyond runs. "He brings energy, belief and sets standards-on and off the field. But now he has a squad of fighters around him."
This shift marks a significant departure from earlier seasons where RCB were often criticised for relying heavily on a few players. Also Read: Top Four IPL 2026 Teams With The Best Indian Core
With a settled squad and improved balance, de Villiers backed RCB to mount another strong title challenge in IPL 2026. He also expressed confidence in Kohli's readiness despite a break from competitive cricket since January.
"He has the best work ethic I've ever seen. He won't come undercooked. I'm expecting a great season from him."
Former India captain Anil Kumble echoed similar sentiments, stating that RCB's identity will always remain closely tied to Kohli. "Like Dhoni and CSK, Virat and RCB will always be synonymous. That legacy will not change."
However, Kumble - who has himself captained the franchise in the past - also highlighted the importance of RCB's improved bowling unit, particularly the role of spinners Krunal Pandya and Suyash Sharma in providing consistency last season.
Kumble also hinted that Kohli could further evolve his batting in IPL 2026, potentially adding innovative shots to his repertoire. "Great players always look to improve. Don't be surprised if he comes with something new this season."
The upcoming IPL season promises high expectations for RCB, who will look to build on their recent success and establish themselves as a dominant force.
