IPL 2026: Sai Sudharsan Breaks World Record despite defeat to KKR
Gujarat Titans batter Sai Sudharsan etched his name in the record books after a decent knock against Kolkata Knight Riders on Saturday (May 16).
The high-stakes clash between the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Gujarat Titans (GT) in IPL 2026 began with GT captain Shubman Gill winning the toss and electing to bowl first.

Hoping to chase down a target on a notoriously batting-friendly pitch with evening dew, Gujarat's decision quickly backfired against a deeply determined KKR batting unit.
What followed the toss was an absolute masterclass in T20 ball-striking. The Kolkata Knight Riders' top order unleashed unprecedented carnage on the GT bowling attack. Powered by a breathtaking 93 off 35 balls from Finn Allen, an unbeaten 82 off 44 from Angkrish Raghuvanshi, and a late 52-run blitz off 28 balls by Cameron Green, KKR posted a mammoth 247/2 in their 20 overs.
This historic total not only firmly cemented KKR's dominance at home but also set a brand new benchmark. The 247-run mountain became the highest team score ever recorded against the Gujarat Titans by any opposition in IPL history, surpassing the 243/5 previously set by the Punjab Kings in 2025.
Sai Sudharsan's Gutsy Innings and Resilience
Faced with a near-impossible run chase of 248, the Gujarat Titans needed immediate acceleration. Top-order maestro Sai Sudharsan answered the call with aggressive intent, racing to a quick-fire 23 off just 13 balls before a severe physical setback forced him to retire hurt.
Despite the injury, his fight was far from over. After GT captain Shubman Gill anchored a magnificent counter-attack, eventually falling for a brilliant 85 off 49 balls, Sudharsan bravely returned to the crease to resume his innings. Battling through the pain, the left-hander showcased immense grit, bringing up his half-century and ultimately finishing with a stellar 53 off 28 balls. While GT valiantly reached 218/4 and lost by 29 runs, Sudharsan's gritty knock secured him a massive permanent place in global cricket history.
Historic Milestone: Fewest Innings to 3000 Runs in T20s
During his gutsy half-century at Eden Gardens, Sai Sudharsan officially crossed the 3000-run milestone in T20 cricket. Remarkably, he achieved this feat in just his 78th inning, obliterating the previous world record held by Australian veteran Shaun Marsh by a massive seven-inning margin.
By achieving this milestone, Sudharsan has left behind some of the greatest legends of the shortest format, including T20 royalty like Chris Gayle.
Fewest Innings to 3000 runs in T20s:
78 - Sai Sudharsan
85 - Shaun Marsh
86 - D'Arcy Short
86 - Devon Conway
87 - Chris Gayle
